Thread: Just got a phone call fro a host at a Strip Casiino...

  1. #1
Earlier tonight I got a call from a host at a Strip casino who said he would like to invite me back because I haven't been there in a long time.

Actually its been years since I played there, but I never "stayed there." Just played with their card.

And I was there about two months ago when I cruised the Strip checking out video poker. Like other "Strip casinos" the video poker was not good.

He was talking about their new high limit slot lounge, and I told him that I when I stopped in a few weeks ago I only found 7/5 Bonus. And I quickly found out he didn't know what "7/5 Bonus" meant.

The host promised he would look at what is available and get back to me.

I think I accomplished a couple of things in the conversation:

    1. Told the host that I want a better video poker play.
    2. Discovered that this host really doesn't know much about the product he's selling -- because if he doesn't know what games are on the property, how can he represent the property?

I'll let you know if the host really does call me back or writes me off.

I'm surprised the host doesn't know what 7/5 refers to -- you think he's on the level or feigning ignorance? Twenty years ago, maybe you could get away with not knowing -- now a host really should be aware. Please keep us posted.

I don't even think he knew what "bonus poker" is. Several times he asked me what the game was.

But I have had other hosts at other casinos who had little knowledge of casino games. There are some hosts who advanced to the position after being dealers-- I know of one host at Caesars who was a dealer then a floor man and a pit boss. But too many hosts came out of college where they studied business management or hotel management.

    Update: no call on Wednesday.

I've never understood why players are so fascinated with these casino hosts. This one you're dealing with (from MGM?) isn't even in the same ballpark as you and only wants a warm body coming in under his name. Casinos are all belt-tightening, and you're sure to find younger and inexperienced wannabee pier pipers as hosts in this environment.

In my 20+ years as a player I've rarely used these people for anything. You get far better offers generated by the computers from the marketing depts., and if you come in under those and win often then you won't be flagged as easily or bothered by them when you're on property. Of course, AP's will swear by them because it's just another method they use of feeling good about losing. That's one of the silly tricks Jean Scott has used in her career in order to get people to buy her useless Frugal Gambler nonsense. What she wrote is nothing short of obvious to even budding vp players, and anyone who feels they need her books is truly clueless anyway.

Rob, this is about an out of the blue solicitation and showing that a casino host has a lack of knowledge about the product they are "selling." If I don't get a call back in a couple more days I will reveal the name of the casino. I'm going to give the casino host a chance to do what he said he would do.

Yes. I've been getting more of those than I used to from numerous casinos because I played all over Nv. Some of them are stupid--"come on in for a couple nights and we'll evaluate your play to see what we can do". Duh. Others I say straight out that I'll come in RFB only. Some I apply my freebie requirement to. It's rare anyone accepts, but there's been some. I never asked about video poker games because I know I know more than them, and it's never the paytables that matter when I'm trying to get a good deal. Besides, I can beat any BP paytable anywhere at any time.

Sorry bigfoot but I've never known about the pm feature here. Why don't you send me an email to rob.singer@yahoo.com with the mailing address. I have a few of them left down in Pahrump in our storage facility there. My daughter is going over next week to get a car from it and the books are right inside the door. I'll ask her to mail it no problem.

Here's what I'd do. Call him tomorrow and see if he has answers. Either way, ask him for whatever amount of free play you think you can squeeze out of him. When you go to LV, stay & play at you usual place if that's what you want to do, and also check into his property if it's required in order to get the free play, play it thru once--then leave. Who cares what he says after that. You may even receive another offer down the road.

I have no reason to call him. He had his chance. He proved he didn't want a player who had any knowledge of gaming. He didn't even know what 8/5 Poker was and he had a chance to find out for me if the casino even had the game at the $5/coin level. The truth is he didn't care. The host is at WYNN.

What a moron this host was. I have seen quite a few of them the past couple of years as it seems they are hiring more and more people with no gambling knowledge in these positions. I never use host anymore and just use the mailers they send out still get free or discounted rooms and food and don't have to put up with dealing with them.

Alan, what difference does it make if you can get $500 in freeplay out of him and walk with at least $250? If you don't care for his ignorance, take a towel for good measure.

Not surprised he's at Wynn. The fact you actually recognize paytables puts you in the minority of Wynn players.

Race/sports at Wynn isn't bad. You get nothing unless you're a 20K a day guy, but you get very little in race/sports anywhere, and Wynn often has non-vanilla numbers. The rest of the casino is for those people too cool and too rich to care that they're getting hosed.

And, oh yeah, what Rob said -- take the free play and use it. Don't be proud.

Will do, and thanks. I am excited to read it.

Rob Singer authored two books about video poker. This one talks about his month long (??) adventure visiting just about every casino in Nevada. I read it. It's not a book that will give you much information about even his system of playing.
