Thread: Some weirdo on Facebook is trying to "sell" a massive amount of MLife credits for super cheap

  1. #1
On a Facebook group, some guy I never heard of before claimed to have $40k worth of MLife credits, and wanted to "sell" them at an unspecified discount. I told him that I might be interested to buy them as needed, but that there's no way to transfer such credits to other people. I told him the only possible thing he could do was be present when I needed them, and then sell them to me on the spot for some kind of discount, in exchange for cash.

For example, sometimes I will have large dinners at MGM properties with family or friends from out of town, and the bill runs into the thousands. There it would be nice for someone with a ton of points to come down and pay for the meal, and I pay them cash at some cut rate. Win-win.

Also sometimes I have family come into town and they get a bunch of rooms, sometimes suites, which I have no way of getting comped for them, so again they pay real $ for it. Again, here is where points can be useful, but it requires for the person to show up and pay for it on the spot.

I told the guy what I needed, and he told me that it was too much trouble. He claimed that he could "book online for me" any room I needed, via his points. I told him that it didn't work that way, and the room would end up in his name. At best he could put me down as a roommate, but they could potentially demand he show up before I can check in. He swore that it's "never an issue", which I don't believe.

Laughably, he then told me that he was going to sell his entire balance for $750 to "one of several interested parties".

Again, I told him you can't transfer credits like this. He said that he would simply just give his account info to them and his physical card, and they could use it. I told him that MGM will likely check for ID for everything, rendering it worthless to most people, and possibly getting them banned for attempting.

He then came back telling me that I was clueless regarding how the whole thing worked, at which point I had some choice words back to him, and we parted ways.

He did show me an authentic-looking screen shot of almost $40k worth of points, which I don't think was photoshopped.

The question: Do you really think someone buying it for $750 could get any viable use out of this, or is it only a matter of time before they get caught and something bad happens?

FYI, I am not even considering buying the credits this way. I was only interested if he would show up and pay for huge-bill meals I'd have occasionally, or whatever.

Gotta wonder why the guy doesn't use them himself?

He must be desperate, as MGM will likely sniff out the scam and their rules say if they do, the points are void and the original card owner will be bounced out of MLife.

Can't redeem them for freeplay, so no way to cash out.

Yeah I will sell something to someone else worth $40,000, for $750, but I'm not telling you this so you may offer more and get nothing nor be able to get a refund nor know whom I am. Material fraud and a scam.

Why are you interested in this? How could these even be used, aside from "roommate" bookings where you hope that MGM won't ask for the original booker to check in first?

I have wondered if this is some total degen who is flat broke and needs a small amount of cash immediately. That's why he might just want to ship you his card, give you his password, and be done with it. Maybe he's letting it go so cheap ($750 for 40k points) because he knows these will be difficult or impossible to use, and wants to find a sucker to buy them anyway.

He also told me he had "6 offers for $750" which didn't make any sense. Why would 6 people offer the exact same amount?

I told him he will make more than $750 from me on the first sale of a fraction of the points, if he just waits some months until I need them, and he wasn't interested. He said he's not local and "can't do it", but then when I told him that my huge dinner will be during WSOP, he couldn't explain why this wouldn't work for him, other than being "too much trouble". This guy claims to be a huge winner in poker but I've never heard of him.

Whole thing is suspect. Only thing I think is legit is the points themselves. None of this guy's story makes any sense.

Of course it is too good to be true and doesn't make sense. Obviously not one person will see a dime of these points, there must be something they're hiding, if the story is true in the first place(their story), which I doubt. Perhaps, you should report this to the police.

Is the CES in progress? Could this be related to the CES?

I ask because about 25 years ago, it was standard procedure for some of the international visitors to have chaperones take them around to the various casinos. The visitors, who were not going to be back anytime soon, got players' cards and some of them gambled quite heavily on them, but since they wouldn't be returning, they handed them off to the chaperones/tour guides. The players' cards the visitors' got at MGM were a kind of temporary card at the time, probably a trade-off to quicken the sign-up process during a jammed-up CES. So the chaperones/guides were able to actually use the temporary cards (untethered to identifications) for the points accrued on them. Then they could take the temp cards back and get rated and acquire actual cards that were tethered to the chaperones' real names, but the window to do this was tight.

I just pass this along, as it's quite a coincidence to me that MGM did this way back when and these are MGM points with a pressure to "buy now."

This does seem shady to me too. :/ This gives me an unsettling feeling, like the points would be invalid once he switches them to you or something and you're out your $750 or he turns you in for stealing his points or something like that. The fact that you don't personally know the guy makes this even more shady. It's not like he's a Family Member or a Friend you actually know. This would seem far less shady if he were say your Brother who you actually trust and know.

Take comfort in the fact that no one is actually backing up his wishes to have you permanantly banned.

What are these "credits"? Can't be comps as even Noir caps out at $10,000

This is a legit screen shot. However, it is possible the webpage was modified and it's a complete scam.

I just thought about it a bit more.

I think the guy is just outright scamming. I forgot that you can easily modify webpages displayed on your browser. That's probably what the guy did, and then just snapped a pic with his phone.

I took about 2 minutes to do this with my own actual MGM Rewards screen:

I also just checked out the guy's Facebook. It's full of stolen merchandise he's attempting to sell (either that, or pictures of stolen merchandise he's pretending to sell!)

Obviously this is all phony, and had I scrolled through his profile, it would have been obvious from the start.

Pretty clever trick with the webpage modification though.

So, my feeling that he was shady turned out to be right. P.S. Dan, when are you going to give me an answer on why I still have a Posting Limit when I stopped Trolling in 2020? Or remove the Posting Limit? have asked you multiple times about this and you continue to ignore me. :/

This can't be current as nobody currently has any Holiday Gift Points.

Gold tier status cannot possibly have those comps either. They max out at $5000.00
