Thread: IRS wants copies of the W2-G ?

  1. #1
So I literally have to login to the website and print them out. (or dig them up - but easier to print them)

What happens if I don't attach them? What a fucking absurdity.

I have a friend who once worked for the IRS and their incompetence was a parody of my already dim view.
It is official. Redietz will never be on Dan Druff's podcast. "too much integrity"

Strange. Is this for filing your 2022 taxes. I’ve never needed to provide copies unless the copies show that tax was withheld.

Actually was 2021 but I believe the instructions are also on 2022. These are the instructions from Turbo tax that are printed before the return.

It seems though that if you put any gambling wins this line is inserted. Perhaps TurboTax just thinks you should document your wins?

It doesn't make sense to me, given that the w2-gs were just something I printed off the IRS website.

I'm just curious if anyone had more insight into this or just wants to rant with me.

So as far as I know, you don’t need to provide copies of your W2gs to the IRS. I’ve had my taxes done by several different preparers over the years both as a recreational gambler & professional & what they always needed was the total W2G(s) amounts for the tax year but never copies.

The one exception is occasionally on large jackpots I’ve had taxes withheld & when the W2G shows taxes taken out then you do need to submit a copy(s) of W2Gs that show withholding.

Probably just a kink with turbo tax since the average person rarely gets W2Gs or a significant amount of them.

    But I’m no expert…..

For tax year 2021, I'd given my CPA all the W2G's and he did not attach them when he e-filed my return (he reported the income on the return).

The IRS wrote me saying that the W2G's need to be attached; I told the CPA to forward them, he did, and I got my refund.

When I asked why he hadn't attached them when he e-filed he said "I don't have to."

    Go figure.
    What, Me Worry?

The best fucking thing is you can login to irs.gov and they have the transcripts right there. Why would they even need proof of income ?!? Holy fuck incompetent fucks.
