I think it's always a good idea that we remind ourselves just how much tax we pay for each gallon of gasoline. The photo below shows the state and federal excise tax on a gallon of gas in California. Not included is the sales tax which is added and is levied on top of the excise tax. That means you pay a tax on top of a tax.
