So I get an appointment at Midas, which I've used many times in the past and know they ain't a ripoff. It's a 7 year old vehicle.

So I needed rear brake pads, calipers and rotors. But that ain't all they found. The power steering pump was going out. A tie rod was going bad. And some other small stuff.

So the bill was $2705, $1600 for parts and $1100 for labor. Yes, I know, they just have the parts delivered from the parts store then mark them up 100%. But I don't like fucking around. When something needs fixed I want it fixed now. Time is money. I ain't got time to fuck around and try to save a few bucks.

I'm not really bitching. When you put 50K miles a year on vehicles you are going to pay repairs bills. Get used to it. It's one of my expenses.

Post Covid, at least if you're having OEM parts (meaning, factory) installed, there is not much difference on something like brake pads and rotors between having the dealer do the job, or some non-dealer place, or even buying the parts yourself from the dealer and installing them yourself. It has all evened out.

Even the difference between just having the dealer do it with all factory genuine parts or some other place doing it with non factory parts isn't as great as it was just a few years ago.

This sort of thing applies more or less for any auto repair nowadays, not just a brake job. You used to save a lot by avoiding the dealer for an out of warranty or maintenance job, not as much these days.


These are all things car owners know and have experienced. UNKewlJ, being homeless, has never owned a car in his life. Okay maybe if he'd grown up in NYC, no car and no driver license might be the norm, but Las Vegas is big enough to require a vehicle. Even when we stay in the hotels we like to have our own car present. Tunnel Dwellers like UNKewlJ just need to walk the relatively short distance to the Strip to hustle.

I'm finishing up some work on my '82 Volvo 244 Turbo; the belts were slipping after an engine out to replace the transmission and I discovered a leaking power steering pump hose fitting; last night I put Loctite 592 on the pressure hose threads where it attaches to the pump, but I have to wait 72 hours for it to cure.

Tired of a lumpy idle I removed and tore down the K-Jet / C.I.S. fuel distributor on the work bench: not a task for newbies, fraught with peril.

Lubricated, cleaned, adjusted...the usual stuff.

Won't know if my efforts succeed til I fire 'er up in a couple days.
