Thread: 2024 - New Years Trip Report

  1. #1
We embarked on our journey Saturday morning, December 30th. We left around 11AM from southern California just about an hour north of San Diego on the 15. We opted to take the Bronco rather than the Tesla X Plaid, while we absolutely love the Tesla on road trips. Decided on the Bronco only because we were planning to hit some offroad trails on the way back.

There wasn't really traffic but it was congested until we got to Barstow and we noticed there was a lot of traffic after Barstow... Dark red on the Google Maps. So we got off Lenwood and went north to Highway 58. As 58 got closer to reconnecting to the 15, the 58 was backing up and while we were stopped I noticed Meadow Grove Road, a non-paved road... Turned off and we were off!

This was a beautiful road, it was out of the way, but we were having fun! Average speed was 35-40 MPH it was great!

The plan was to take that road to something else we could connect to Yermo Road to get to another trail that would take us all the way to Nevada. We got past Eddy World using this dirt road and we hopped on to Yermo road. Here is where the clusterfuck really began. Yermo Road (2 lane road) was a complete standstill. We noticed a sand road or wash next to Yermo road so hopped on that until the next place we needed to get to get to this longer route... Harvard Road. There was a 4 way stop sign that no one was stopping at, it was just a constant flow of people trying to turn left from Yermo to Harvard and people going north on Harvard both trying to get back on the 15 parking lot. Since we were on the sand road portion we skipped all the main Yermo road traffic. We got north of the 15 again going up and around Harvard road to Powerline Road.

Harvard was a great sandy road we were flying over. Now to this point I've been in 2-Wheel Drive since its all been pretty easy roads. I completely wasn't thinking when we turned onto powerline but it was a huge puddle and I was slowly coming to a standstill and I said "Shit I'm in 2WD" I stop to not dig us too deep, throw it into 4WD and go back and forth and get us out of this mud pit. I was inches from being stuck...

We got out and I was thrilled! I wasn't going to stop as the entire portion of this road was soft so we just kept going! 50-60 MPH it was great!

Then it turned to more gravel and sand we slowed down a bit and kept enjoying no traffic...

This eventually took us back to Yermo road where we to go further south to a road I can't recall the name of, but when we got back to Yermo, there was a train parked blocking us from getting south of Yermo road! We had no choice but to backtrack slightly on Yermo road back to Harvard as Yermo was closed going east.

When we got back to Harvard the plan was to go south. Absolutely no one was going south. For miles while we were going south on Harvard the TWO LANE ROAD was turned into people sitting in traffic and others going north on Harvard in the south lane full speed. We ended up just driving in the dirt there were too many people who turned the two way two lane road into a one way street.

We took Harvard down to Route 66 and headed East.

It was an absolutely beautiful drive! We could have taken the 40, but Route 66 was completely empty and we were probably going the same speed we would have on the 40.

We ended up taking Route 66 to 95 and went north into Vegas.

Basically encountered no cars until the 95 and it was smooth sailing the entire way.

We got to Green Valley Ranch at about 8PM. I've been stuck on the 15 for more than 8 hours with similar looking traffic and this was a much more enjoyable way to spend that time.

Got to our comped room and settled in. Kiddo was in the car all day so dropped him off at Kid Quest to run around a bit (Our main reason for staying at Stations properties).

I had $100 free play so took it over to the Video Poker with the wife. She loaded up $40 cash playing $0.25 Bonus and I was playing $0.50 Bonus. I hit 4x4's for $100 and cashed out like $180. She hit a small 4OAK and cashed out $60.

We went over the blackjack which I just started playing... I've never been a blackjack player, neither was my father. I can't count to 21....

First dealer was so freaking fast I couldn't take it. Thankfully she only dealt like 3 hands till the next dealer came in. We were playing double deck. This dealer was nice and helped out a bit. I started betting $25 a hand and quickly moved up to $100-$400 a hand. Hit a couple black jacks with $400 even! I think I did alright. I know I made some stands where I should have bet where the dealer was showing a 10 but I only had 15. I figured there was a good chance the dealer didn't have a 17 and I was right some of the time and the dealer busted. Ended up making a about $2k profit. Placed some nice tips for the dealer I think he was happy. Got the kiddo and went up to the room.

Our original plan was to leave on Tuesday January 2nd, but with all the traffic we experienced I decided to book a stay at Durango from the 2nd till the 4th to avoid some going home traffic. We also booked an "Awakening" show for the 2nd...

In the morning, tried out a new Vegan spot we heard about "The Modern Vegan" and OMG was their breakfast amazing!

French Toast with Fruit and Walnuts.

Plan was to go back for Dinner.

After breakfast we went to this park in Boulder where Bighorn Sheep are known to hang out.

We ended up being in the last Dam tour of 2023 so that was pretty cool!

After the dam tour we went to dinner...

Ended up going to this vegan Italian restaurant. I can't remember the name, it was OK....

After dinner, dropped kiddo off at the play place, I went to play a little. It was quite busy... I was afraid to play blackjack as there were other people at the table and I don't know my shit... The face-up pai gow was running and only had one or two sets open and I didn't feel like playing at a busy game (this is important to make note of). So just walked around a bit then noticed that pai gow table was now empty and the dealer was up pushing in chairs.

So I walked up to the table and asked the dealer "Are you closing up or just doing some housekeeping" in a joking manner as I like to interact with dealers and tip if they have a good attitude and we are winning... No response from the dealer... So I sit down.... Now note, the night before was my first time playing blackjack or a table game at Green Valley. I only played craps here one other time. I was getting green but mainly bets of $50 - $100 and up... if I got a blackjack It was not paying me dollar chips, I never seen a dollar chip here... The last time I played craps here was over a year ago... So I asked, how much the light was (the bet for the big jackpot) he said $2. So I gave him $500 in cash, and he cut out 450 in green, 8 x $5 for $40 in reds and then 5 of another chip. Now where I play Pai Gow the light is $2 and they use $1 chips. I said, you're short 5 chips.... no response. He calls out change $500 for the floor person, she verifies, and I said again, its short $5... He pushes the chips to me, and I said again its short $5, and he says "Its not short those are $2 chips" I said how am I supposed to know that I've never seen one before.... I gave him back the chips, to color up and left. He could have not been such a dick about it, How am I supposed to know they are $2 chips... He could have simply said "these are two dollars" and not be a dick about it.

Anyway... After that I didn't want to place a single bet in the place... Don't even feel like staying at Green Valley again.

So was time to get kiddo from the play place and go to our spot for New Years fireworks.

Went back to the hotel and went to sleep.

Same breakfast, but at a different Plant Power location.... Bacon Egg and Cheese Croissant, hash browns and an oreo cookie shake.

Plan for this evening was dinner at Nobu, figured I'd use my Dimond reward meal. After breakfast decided to see if they had a dress code.... well I asked my wife to check. She found some site that said jacket was required for men, of course, I didn't second guess her....

So we went to the north premium outlets and I got a Calvin Klein separates suit as my normal joggers and t-shirt wouldn't not be sufficient... I clean up pretty nicely I think, but I normally am just in joggers / sweat pants and a t-shirt and hoody. All black of course....

So we go back to the hotel... Kiddo goes to play place, wife starts to get ready for dinner and I feel like playing some video poker...

I go to my favorite most fun video poker game... 3-way action... If you don't know the game it is based on double double bonus, but you are paid on the deal, the draw, and on a 7 card hand. The best 7 card hand is AAAA222 - 4 aces and 3 of the same kicker... I've hit 4 x 2's and 3 kickers before but betting lower amounts. You get paid for a royal across 7 cards as well, I hit one on the "Royal Weekend" my father has talked about before where he said I hit like 5 royals in a weekend... Doesn't pay as much as a full royal but its nice.

I started playing $0.10 denomination which is $9.00 a push. I wasn't hitting anything so bumped it up to $0.25 denom for $22.50 per push. I hit a small 4OAK which was nice.

Then this one happened. Dealt only an Ace and drew AAA2 for 4AWK! Come on, just need two more two's two more twos for 120000 credits! Sando, two black jacks...

Still paid $3600 I'll take it lets go!!! Played a little more then I decided to try to hit the $2 progressive. It was just over $13K

    I hit the 3-Way Action 4AWK at 3.33PM

Just over a half hour later.... BOOM!

"GOT THE KICKER" I yell as this always excites me!

Played for the royal and it wasn't coming... Decided to try a little more black jack... This dealer wasn't as nice to help my basic strategy questions... One hand, I was betting $200 and got dealt 2 x 2's vs a 7. I wasn't sure if I should split.... I decided not to, got another 2... hit again, and I stopped at 16 when I pulled a picture. Dealer had like 15 and ended up drawing 21 or something... Pretty sure I should have split the twos... Anyway, dusted off about 1K and went up to get dressed for dinner....

We got to Nobu at Caesars a little early... While waiting, we pulled up the menu to look and Wife was looking at the website and said "oh they don't have the same dresscode here" turned out she was looking at a non-nobu website and it was old info... I said, I didn't think any place in vegas would actually have a dress code like that, its Caesars... Anyway, we don't get out this often so why not live it up...

The kid loves sushi for sure!

We didn't get many pix of the food as I usually just eat Sushi as soon as it comes out.

We started with the Yellow Tail with Jalapeno Sashimi. Then the Sushi: Salmon, Salmon Belly, Albacore, Toro, and then another round of the same. Then for filler I got a Nobu roll.
I have some allergies so asked what was in it. The waiter did not mention Cilantro... Took a bite when the Nobu Roll came and it tasted like soap... They made me a new one without Cilantro... Burn cilantro in hell!!!!

Now, is a $25 piece of Toro there any better than the $3 piece at Kura Revolving Sushi (our favorite place), yeah, its better, but I'll take the $3 Kura any day... Overall the Sushi was fantastic.

We kept seeing this sizzling beef thing go by, so we asked what it was... It was the Wagu on rock set on fire at the table. I don't eat meat so got an order for the wife. She said it was amazing!

Now the bill came. It was exactly what I figured it would be with exception of the Wagu thing. I didn't look at the price very closely but it wasn't just $55 it was $55 per ounce and the minimum order was 4 ounces! So I cracked up because I didn't see that, I thought it was $55 per person I guess... But I thought it was pretty funny. Wife enjoyed it so that is all that matters.

The Diamond celebration dinner kept the meal under $1K so I was happy about that.

Towards the end of dinner I started feeling funky....... On the way back to the hotel I said, lets stop at CVS.... Picked up a Covid test...

fuck fuck fuck.... It was hitting me fast... I was basically fine all day and I just started feeling really crappy from the end of dinner to the time we got back to the hotel. Throat started feeling horrible, body aches, headache... fuck... Tested and fuck... I have it again... 2nd time in 5 months...

At this point its nearly midnight. I reach out to my mobile phone urgent care thing and order up some paxlovid, can't get it till the morning... My anxiety is off the charts, I'm sweating bullets... Feel like shit... Wife has some Tylenol and it helps me fall asleep around 4 in the morning...

Wake up at 9 said to the wife, we gotta leave, I can't stay here and do this I want to get home before I feel worse...

Now we have reservations at Durango, its comped, but if I no show I get dinged.... I call, they are understanding and cancel my reservation with no penalty...

Now our Awakening tickets... No cancellation policy can't transfer etc... So we call and email the box office... They are nice enough to give us a raincheck on our tickets...

PIck up the prescription at 11am and hit the road to head home... Again we leave at 11am. There was a bunch of traffic after Jean before State Line and into California a bit... So we filled up at Jean, Went up the 161 to Sandy Valley Road and were off road basically until just before Yermo. It was a great drive. I think we got home around 5ish? It was still light out is all I remember... After we got home I was in a covid funk until earlier today... Today is the first day I've been able to function doing "work" for my business.. Thankfully my staff is able to take care of things while I'm out...

So yeah... Overall was a great New Years trip. One little bit of Drama... I took back the Rona, wife and kid most likely have it as well... Good news I'm feeling better but still in the middle of it and absolutely miserable...

Looking forward to staying at Durango, I just really wish they had a Kids Quest in there and we are really looking forward to seeing Awakening.

    Happy Fucking New Year

Great reporting Jason....same with the pictures! But these people by & large will never be able to comprehend what it's like being capable of going on a FAMILY ROAD TRIP--let alone understanding choosing healthy meals. And was that your Wheaton Terrier with you?

All you'll get is "you're an addict, just like you're father" and "I'll bet (aka, hope) you went home broke". Of course, mentioning that Tesla Plaid will go right over their heads. Honda Civics and Toyota Corollas are more their speed.

    Get well soon!

    Thanks!

I hope all is well with you! I still think of you every time I play VP. (which isn't that often these days).

That is our Golden Doodle. She comes everywhere with us. She is a real service dog unlike most of the "service dogs" you see in Vegas or anywhere these days...

Definitely came home with quite a bit more than I went with... I have some poker goals this year and this helps with the bankroll for sure!

    Thanks!

Fascinating trip report, thanks for posting!

I knew the Nobu dress code had to be a false alarm.

I think table game dealers get their customer service training from sportsbook ticket writers.

I got lost trying to envision your driving routes. Did you identify a reliable path for when I-15 is clogged? The I-40 route is probably clear most of the time, but that's 2 hours extra unless you admit defeat and go to Laughlin instead.

Speaking of Noboo .. if you want standard Sushi and not whatever nonsense price Noboo charges then you won't find it with a noboo on premise. Irritating. Still not as bad as the cookie cutter food courts of mgm on the strip. Lol fried chicken and pretzels or whatever the fuck.
It is official. Redietz will never be on Dan Druff's podcast. "too much integrity"

We didn't really have a plan, but were looking at maps once we saw the traffic. I started to recreate the route we took on maps but gave up last night. The plan on the way home however was to take offroad trails from state line to barstow. We have gone through the mojave preserve before but that is an all paved road.

The 40-95 route was definitely longer but absolutely no traffic while the 15 looked at a standstill for a large portion...

Oh we definitely were not looking for budget sushi at this meal. It was good sushi but not the best especially for the money. So far my favorite "Premium Sushi" in Vegas is from Morimoto Las Vegas at the MGM Grand. I still have dreams about the infused soy sauce they use.

    This is Morimoto Sushi...

    Nice hits man!

Speaking of the surprise on your bill. I know someone who works at a very high end steakhouse and it is policy there when Wagu is ordered that the server clearly verifies the price per ounce (also 5oz minimum order) and gets confirmation from the customer that it's understood. I'm assuming this was not done?
Luckily you won enough that it didn't get you down!

Damn Covid... my wife and I both probably had it back in October and now wife is already on round 2. There's been so many people sick in the last couple weeks I can't count them.

Nice trip report, esp. the off-roading portion.

Nothing quite like almost getting stuck in mud to make a man realize the value of four wheel drive.

Covid is definitely no joke. No fun at all and back to back, ugh that sucks. Smooth recovery!

So glad we didn't get stuck. I had no recovery boards with me and I can't imagine how long it would have taken someone to get there. It was a giant mud puddle, this portion of powerline road was 4 lanes wide of mud and water puddles.

There was one portion where water eroded a little canyon across the road. I was going so fast we just jumped it. It was really fun.

It's pretty wild how close they are. At one point, they got attracted to something on the other end of the park and ran through. I got it on video. Pretty cool to be that close to them.

    Touche;.

Put THAT in your pipe and smoke it, Robert.

That hot-rod Dodge you claim to own would get blown into the weeds by a car owned and operated by a long-haired musician.

Sort of like James Bond getting his ass kicked by Tiny Tim.

Not as far-fetched as one might think. I had lunch in an Atlantic City casino coffee shop in a booth next to Tiny Tim. That was a big, rough-looking man. Bond would have been hard-pressed to beat him.

No better way of forcing a bunch of wannabees into showering a decendant of Alan with praise and congratulations, than exposing their true and envious feelings.....

Exactly why I brought up the Tesla Plaid. My Dodge is faster after 140mph but would lose every 0-60 and 1/4mile race every time. Nothing else can compete with the 1020hp, all wheel drive, and 100% instantaneous tourque off the line with a TP.

Now for all you envious well-wishers who'd never have the cheddar to even play $2vp---tell us how you REALLY feel had I not shamed you into climing onto the "son of Alan's" adventure report!

    Predictably pathetic.....

After 140mph... eh... you might get some of these guys to believe that. A Plaid 1/4mi traps nearly 160mph and a stock Hellcat closer to 130mph. Even if you force enough boost into a Hellcat engine to make up some of that deficit, there's still likely no realistic race on a street that can be won.

Don't get me wrong, I love these modern Dodge muscle beasts... I have one too. But a car like the Tesla Plaid is a game changer.

Driving the Plaid is like nothing I've ever experienced. I've had some fast cars in the past, but this is insane.

I don't particularly go 140, and I can't take it to a drag strip around here as it is too fast to go without a roll cage... but on the interstate, at 80mph, if I mash the accelerator next thing you know you are over 100.

At a stop light, not even a chirp or wheel spin, you just get thrown to the back of the seat if you stomp on it.

    It is pretty insane.

I'll take you for a ride
