Thread: How is the weather where you are?

  1. #1
I thought we were going to get lucky and miss it this year. This winter had been so nice. But no such luck. It turned cold today. It's already 9 below and snowing with -31 windchill. It will bottom out Saturday at -37 and windchills in the 50's. Then a slow warming trend. We won't get above zero until next Tuesday or Wednesday.

I've got the refrigerator and cupboards stocked. I ain't frickin' going anywhere until it blows over. I think I'll play some online poker tournaments.

Gonna catch up on some movies too, Napoleon, Killers of the Flower Moon, Oppenheimer.

I don't know how you people (most of the country) deal with these kinds of winters, mickey? I was born and raised in Florida and now live in Vegas. In between I had 8 years of Philadelphia and Philly winters, which are mild compared to what you describe, but grueling and difficult for someone like me that isn't used to snow and cold. That was the one thing about my time in Phila that I hated.

In answer to your question. It is colder than usual in Vegas right now. The average high temperature for January is 59 degrees. That means many days of 60 or better and a few closer to 50. It is currently 48 at 1:30 pm and windy. I don't expect any sympathy from those of you that deal with artic conditions, but 48 and windy is too cold for me. I wear shorts every day of the year.

I tell you it’s wonderful to be here, man. I don’t give a damn who wins or loses. It’s just wonderful to be here with you people.

How does he "deal" with Montana winters? It's called being prepared, tough-skinned, and not being a pussy.

We actually can't wait to get back to the cold winter weather. We leave Mon. for a few days in Tahoe then driving to our home in S. Dakota for several weeks. Got a rental SUV for 4 weeks and we travel winters with a generator, extra gasoline, and plenty of food & water with a Yeti cooler and propane cooker just in case. In other words, we're PREPARED, and we don't whine about nor fear the elements. AQ likely sits around at home scared to death of "global warming" or whatever the weaklings call it today. I look at travel this time of year as an opportunity to experience what life has to offer when it comes to challenging conditions. Most of you hide in your safe spaces.

Claiming to have spent years in a shithole like Philadelphia is just as pathetic as claiming to win "$100k a year" at bj. The little people just can't lie big enuf.

You must be the BOMB in shorts.

It's really hard to find a place that's tolerable year-round. What criteria would you use? Here's what I want:

    - avg January temp >40
    - avg July temp <80
    - avg precip [edited my typo] <20

I couldn't find a composite map, so I'll have to do them individually:

If you mentally overlay all of those, the only thing you're left with is fucking California.

Always nice and cool in San Diego in the summer but you don't have to go far inland to run into the hot stuff.

And near the coast, you run into the fog stuff.

Still very overall attractive though by the numbers. It has basically no rainfall during the summer and adjacent months.

I'd have thought just the fact that I take extra gasoline would have ticked you off.....

It is good to see you can still be funny.

I really expected you to tell me I couldn't afford a Yeti cooler. I was pleasantly surprised.

Kewl, you should learn how to be funny from Rob. Emulate him a bit in how you respond/troll. I feel your life will be immensely improved.

PS - Actually I just realized that Rob isn't kidding. He thought I was going to be triggered by his mention of taking extra gasoline. LOL. It was the Yeti cooler statement that spoke the hardest. haha..

$250 - $400 a pop. Damn. That is like high-end monk shoes right there.

You have to buy the right clothes. And you have to properly winterize your vehicle. The first think I do with a vehicle is put a remote start in it if it doesn't have one. All Season tires. I buy batteries with 700 cold cranking amps. At oil changes I always ask how many amps my battery is showing. When it starts to weaken I get a new one.

I said I wasn't going to go anywhere today but I'm already thinking about going out. It's in the -20's. I'll just go to the window with the key fob, remote start the vehicle, about 20 minutes and she's an oven. I don't spend much time out in the cold. Just park and go inside a building.

    Upping my game. Ha.

Gambling will addict some of the people, some of the time, but, deludes all of the people, all of the time.

Same as LA. I lived there for about five years and was always amazed at how the temp could go up 20* just going a few miles over the hill into the valley.

For Las Vegas (and other places with mild winters), it isn't just that the winters are mild, but they are short.

Las Vegas has 2 months of (mild) winter. December and January with Ave high temps of 59 and 60. Come end of January winter, for what it is, is over and temps start climbing. Ave Feb temp 65. Ave March 73. Most places despite what the groundhog says, winter lasts through March, some places into April.

I would describe Las Vegas as 2 months of mild winter, 2 months of spring, 2 months of fall and 5-6 months of summer.

mickeycrimm, what you are describing sounds just dreadful to me. But to each his own. Just be careful. Isn't there some medical theory that colder temps cause blood vessels to constrict and more heart attacks to occur? Something like that.

I'm not out in the weather much. The vehicle is right outside the door and is warm when I get in. I park in front of a building and it's only 10 or 20 steps to get inside. I went out today and hit a few casinos. It's a hot and balmy -25. Supposed to bottom out tomorrow at -37 with -50 windchill.

Mickey, since you travel around the country so much playing different casinos and areas, why didn't you plan a month trip getting out if Montana in January. Lol.
