Thread: Heads Up to Todd -- I Received Email Vis-a-Vis VegasCasinoTalk

  1. #1
Well, I have no idea if this is legit, some kind of scam, or what, but I pass it along. If anybody else received this, please let me know. I don't know much about scams of this type, so pardon my ignorance.

I received an email today. An "Andrew Liu" emailed me regarding China wanting to allegedly start up their own "vegascasinotalk," but they saw the name registered, so they contacted me (yeah, makes little sense, although my email is the only legitimate one listed obviously on the vegascasinotalk site).

    https://www.nameregistry.org.cn/

is the contact listed at the bottom of the email.

+86-2161918696 is the first phone number.

    +86-2161918697 is the fax.

    +86-13816428671 is the mobile.

Todd, if you want a copy of the email, just send me your email address and I'll pass it along.

Well, if it's somehow legit, maybe you can actually make a few bucks from the name.

Let me know if this was all a scam or something interesting. The listed address is 12F Kaike Building, No. 1801 Hongmei Road, Shanghai.

    Weird.

Yeah I'm guessing it was a bot scraping for emails, and assumed yours was an admin email.

It is probably a scam. I'll send you my email address in DM.

My companies get those emails sometimes. All it is, is for example say you own

    vegascasinotalk.com

Someone emails you saying in some roundabout fashion that someone has registered the trademark for vegascasinotalk in another country , or has registered your domain name in a different extension for example vegascasinotalk.cn , or is about to register it, and is poised to make some kind of trademark or other challenge to your ownership of your own domain, and wants to make sure you are aware of this, and then if you do write back (I never have) at the end of the day they will try to sell you some domain with a different extension from your dot com.

I am summarizing the con, and there are variations to it, but essentially it is all about trying to get you worried about someone muscling in on your domain or business name, to prompt you to buy something - or pay for some service.

What is interesting is that they didn't just email info@vegascasinotalk dot com which might land at Dan Druff's inbox if he has whatever email he uses for this domain as a catch all, and instead somehow scraped REDietz's email from somewhere on the site, thinking he is the owner.

    Wait a sec...your "companies?"

    As in plural?

So you are in the casinos or online most of the time, you also manage to find the time to run a successful law practice, you have myriad investments you stay on top of and now you reveal that you own at least several companies.

My, how the African immigrant has prospered in the New World...or how active your imagination has become...bwa ha ha ha

AI is definitely narrowing the focus of phishing emails. I got an interesting one last week. It was from someone claiming to be the new CFO of one of my distributors. They had the distributor's logo, but used their old address, however what immediately alerted me was the sender was a gmail acct and it wasn't actually addressed to me. A decent effort but still glaring problems in the execution. Just surprised to see something like this being that both companies are relatively small.
