Recently, various news services have been crediting "Skype" for the transmission of news. The credits go something like this: "John Joe reports via Skype" or "John reported to us on Skype."

Why?

When I worked at CBS Network News back in the days of the dinosaurs (the mid-1970s) the CBS Standards book said that CBS reports would not say "via satellite" or whatever for how we got the news reports. First of all, the reasoning was, the audience doesn't care how we got the report. Secondly, if you credit "via satellite" do you also have to credit "via taxi cab" and via "phone line" and where does it stop?

So now, the credit is going to Skype. Someone clue me in?
