Thread: The next time you use any automated bill breaker or change machine.

The next time you use any automated bill breaker or change machine, see if the machine dispenses $10 bills. I received an email that asked if the "problem" with the new $10 bill design was ever completely "fixed" by the automatic bill acceptor industry.

You might remember that when the new $10 bill design was introduced a couple of years ago, the bill acceptors in slot machines did not correctly "read" the new bills and they were rejected by the software. The problem was reportedly fixed. But according to the email, some change makers and "ticket redemption machines" do not hold $10 bills and will spit out two five-dollar bills instead of a single $10 bill.

I suggested to the writer of the email that this just might be something done for the convenience of the casino and whatever service stocks the machines with currency. Perhaps they just don't want to be bothered with the $10s because these TITO (ticket in, ticket out) redemption machines also have to stock $1 bills in addition to $20s and perhaps $50s and $100s. There just might not be enough "cases" for all of the "common" denominations.

I will ask the next time I am in a place that has these types of machines.

But in the meantime-- do you see $10 bills being dispensed, and are there any problems with bill acceptors and the $10 notes?

That's weird. Everytime I cash tickets in those machines I always get perturbed by the fact that when 10's can be served it's always 5's that comes out, and that's been my experience for a long long time.

What's this "bill breaker" machine you speak of? Ballers cash out at the cage.

(Seriously, I don't recall getting tens, just fives.)

I'm going to offer one more guess... could they shun using $10 bills because they might be confused for $100 bills??

Every VP machine on which I've tried a new $10 bill has accepted it just as every cash dispensing machine I've used has never given out the new $10 bill.

Isn't this just a humorous symptom of the nature of the casino beast itself? There's no problem for the VP machine bill acceptor to TAKE certain bills, but it's much more problematic for the cash dispenser to GIVE those certain bills?

Same for me. The machines will take $10 bills but only dispenses $5 bills.

The kiosks @ MGM Detroit don't dispense $100s. I cashed out a TITO for over $1,000 after hitting one of my royals there and it gave me all $20, which I then took to the cage for the large. Even smaller TITO amounts slightly over $100 have had $20s dispensed.

(So, Alan, when you hit that royal @ MGM Detroit, remember to go straight to the cashier....unless you like a fat wallet.)

It's the same reason that the machines I'm familiar with also do not have dimes, just pennies, nickels, and quarters. In making change, $5 bills and nickels are essential, dimes and $10 bills aren't. A $10 bill has limited function compared to a $5 bill.

The $10 is much like the $2. They are both an innappropriate currency denomination. Each denomination should be a rational figure that is about 4 or 5 times the next largest denomination. 1c 5c 25c $1 $5 $20 $100. There is little reason why a $10 is better than 2 $5's, but a $100 is much better than 5 $20's. In my experience, Casinos do not carry dimes or $50's either, for that matter.

It is the same in PA.Machine takes $10 dispenses $5
