Thread: Take the Visa card or gamble?

    Here's the offer:

You walk into a casino and go to the players club and present your ID. You have a choice between a $200 Visa Card (effectively cash) or you have $200 of free play.

Which do you choose? And more importantly, why?

Take the Visa card because all I would do is turn the freeplay into cash. Since the Visa card is already the same as cash there would be no reason to play it. Especially if the only plays were negative.

However, I can see another form of logic. If you are going to play anyway, that means you are going to put cash into the machines. So, you might as well use the freeplay right there and not have to deal with the Visa card at all.

As a diamond at Harrahs for years, many, many such offers came to me and I ALWAYS took the VISA card even if I was there to play a session, simply because it was never to be figured into my $2500 minimum win goal and was always a bonus. Nonsense though to whether or not there were + or - machines to play the $200 on. For that amount in a one time situation, the effect would be negligible if any on the outcome.

I would think you would have to take the Visa card -- even if you were playing a positive expectation game. In this case $200 is too small of an amount to give you any sense of confidence that you would get a positive return even on a positive game.

If you were going to play anyway, as Arc suggests, I would remove $200 from my gambling budget, and call the $200 Visa card "a win" for that $200 of my gambling budget.

I think what makes the Visa card example an interesting discussion is that it is a cash equivalent. If it were $200 gift card for some service or store then valuing the card would be different. A $200 Visa Card to me is worth the same as a $200 Gas card, but it is worth much more than a $200 card at Needless Markup.
