Thread: How many "techniques" or skills go into playing live poker?

  1. #1
This came out of a discussion on another thread about gambling skills. I wonder if we could like all of the techniques or skills needed to play "live poker" whether they be cash games, ring games, tournaments?

Here are the skills and techniques I came up with:

    1. Bluffing other players into thinking your cards are better than the machine's cards.
    2. Acting so that other players think you are "weak" when really your hand is strong.
    3. Reading other players to determine if their cards are weak or strong.
    4. Betting to pressure other players to fold to you.
    5. Reading the board to know when your hand is best.
    6. Knowing when your hand is not the best and folding.
    7. Playing some hands with weak cards and intentionally losing to set players up for when you have a strong hand.
    8. Scouting out tables for their players' strengths and weaknesses.
    9. Betting from position.
    10. Knowing the rules of play.

    What else?

There are a couple of others that come to mind...

    11. Checking for bad beat jackpots
    12. Checking for comps and promotions including free and discounted meals

    13. Having a good memory of how each opponent bet in each round of a hand
    14. Taking notes on each player and how s/he plays overall....tight, loose, etc.
