Thread: Observations on A C gambling

  1. #1
(Alan this has nothing to do with Vegas, besides vp, didn't know where to post it)

Wife and I just got back from a casual A C trip for 2 days. She only plays quarter Deuce's Wild. Mostly getting away from our business which peaks in our resort town in the summer.
We stayed at Borgata but did venture out to the new Revel. Wow Revel was dead while Borgata was packed. Bad vibe to the place. Doesn't look like they are doing well at all. Half the stores in the 'mall' are vacant, maybe 100 people in casino and summer is now over. I would have serious reservations about trusting these machines. Put $20 in a dollar slot, cashed out first spin with $26 and left.

During my time taking occasional pot shots in Borgata high limit room only saw 1 other person total playing video poker and a few others playing slots.
The rest of the casino was very busy during the day, packed at night. Plenty disposable income in the north east U.S.
Ceasars, Hilton (formerly), Resorts high limits were completely empty !

Borgata did have Bonus Aces 7/5 up to $25. In fact the highest denom at Borgata is $25 so the $73,500 Singer Strategy will have to wait.... ha ha.

When Dancer comes back to Borgata, which he has in the past to 'teach', he will love the Dueces Wild paytables. 100 credits Wild Royal and 60 credits for 5 of a kind. (92.3%)
In all seriousness though , 92% VP game at that level? That's just wrong. With MGM owning 1/2 share I would think they would offer equivalent to Vegas strip, or do they ?

In the end I lost $800 and wife won $600 but with the comped suite.......

Revel is in serious trouble, yes. It's going to have a lot of trouble keeping up with bond payments and NJ Gov. Christie dropped the ball on this one. There was plenty of warning for the Governor to see that the project was doomed when Morgan Stanley backed out and wrote off $1.4 billion as a loss while Revel was still under construction....

Peak Oil is here! The U.S has reached the limits of hyper-growth fueled by cheap hydrocarbons...

Not sure if this was an analogy or you believe peak oil is here. We are decades away from peak oil although cheap oil is already long gone. For example, there are many old oil fields that still have almost as much oil left as we've pumped out. The problem is it is now expensive to access that oil. It doesn't flow out on its own. If oil prices stay high then it will eventually be profitable to force that oil out.

There's also lot's of ways to make oil that are financially viable with high oil prices. LNG, coal->oil, bio-fuels like algae, etc.

Finally, there's trillions of barrels of shale oil that only needs improved technology to make viable.

Yeah I probably spoke too soon on this topic of Peak Oil and I mentioned it because of Revel's apparent failure being an indirect, non-obvious consequence of tighter constraints on energy supplies. This is an interesting topic, but I don't want to hijack the thread over it. Might be worthwhile exploring it on Open Forum?

Is there some legislative cap on the return of VP machines and slot machines in NJ ??

That they must pay back at least 83%.

Peak oil analogy I don't think applies here. With more competition PA, MD, NY,DE with better pay tables. I read an article a while back in a NJ newspaper. It was about NJ casinos keeping progressives that were not won, they now can. I remember a quote from a spokes person, I think Borgata, that said revenues were down because of competition.....so they were going to tighten up machines and progressives for larger jackpots and so you would wager more. I know it sounds crazy but that's how they are thinking. 'Gee it will take me 10K to win that $1200 w2 taxer instead of 5K".

Is that a change? Or were they always there? Casino handles are down, and perhaps the casinos are loosening up again to bring back players.

Last time I was at Rincon a manager came over to chat and said he was hoping that some of the better games that are only found in the Diamond Lounge (yes they have VP in the Diamond Lounge) would be added to the regular, public floor.

I don't know as it was the first time I played VP at Resorts.I did not ,however, find at .25/.50 8/5 BP at Atlantic,Tropicana,Ballys,Harrahs,Golden Nugget,Taj Mahal ,Showboat or Revel.I did notice allot of 6/5 BP up to $25.

Does AC still have all those JW games where the jackpot is for 5 of a kind and the natural royal only pays 500? I've seen a few of those in Nevada over the years but they were rampant whenever I went to AC. I didn't see many at the Borgata but the Taj had a roomful. Never been to Revel but I've been keeping up on their troubles.

I saw some of those at Rincon. Rincon also has a game where four deuces plus a joker pays 10,000 coins. That's $50,000 on the $5 game.

Find a comfortable chair for that one. The cycle for the quad 2's with a joker is over 130,160.

Too bad about Revel. There is a taco truck in Revel operated by one of the top chefs in the U.S. named Jose Garces (check spelling). Best Tacos, etc. ever.

But yes-never has been anyone in the casino when I have been there.

Yes. I hit 2, 5 of a kind progressives ($) 10 years ago in one day at Trump Marina. Very high variance game. I overheard the jackpot payout attendant using disparaging words towards me about my luck. That's one of the reasons I don't tip.
