Because of some production problems and actual product shortages here in Southern California, many independent gas stations without contracts with wholesalers have been forced to shut down. And company owned gas stations are now posting pump prices in the range of $5 a gallon. Yes, that's five dollars a gallon.
We've often mused about what we would do when the price of gas reaches five dollars, and I can tell you now that with the price of gas at $5 a gallon I am doing things differently.
I decided not to run my car through the car wash when I stopped for gas on Friday.
And when I stopped for gas this past Thursday I did not fill the tank as I usually do. Instead I bought $40 worth -- about eight gallons -- hoping that the refinery problems will end and the price will drop this coming week.
And when I needed to go to bank to use the ATM (about a half mile away) I consciously made the decision to walk while in the past I might have made the drive or walked. This time I never even considered getting in the car.
On Saturday night I thought about taking a drive to my local casino (local meaning about 100 miles away) and I decided not to.
Today, I decided not to get in the car to zip over to a shopping mall to do some window shopping.
I was one of those people who said that five dollars a gallon was the point where I would make some changes. Two weeks ago I was paying about $4.45 a gallon and there really isn't much diffrence between $4.45 and $5 except when you stop and say to yourself, "five dollars a gallon, really?"
