This just in Friday morning... X Train and Union Pacific have an operating agreement (conditional) for the XTrain to operate on UP's tracks.

The full news release is below. Note also that the start date is now late 2013 and the $99 one-way fare is now called "introductory." Also note that Daggett, California is "a small town in the Mojave Desert located approximately eight miles east of Barstow on I-40," and that comes from the Daggett website.

So what about service to Southern California? Or will the XTrain start near Barstow until it "gets up to speed" and can extend to Fullerton?

The last we heard was that the XTrain was not going to have a stop at Union Station in Los Angeles.

LAS VEGAS, NV--(Marketwire - Nov 16, 2012) - Las Vegas Railway Express, Inc. (LVRE) (OTCQB: XTRN) and Union Pacific Railroad have signed a conditional agreement to provide passenger service on Union Pacific-owned right of way between Las Vegas, Nev., and Daggett, Calif. This agreement is contingent upon LVRE fulfilling a variety of conditions in a specified time frame. LVRE plans to operate an expedited luxury train service between the Los Angeles basin and Las Vegas through the use of Union Pacific track. Known as the "X Train," the service is currently scheduled for commencement in late 2013.

"We are proud that Union Pacific is working with us on this exciting and historic project," commented Michael Barron, President and CEO of Las Vegas Railway Express, Inc. "This moment will be long remembered as an important milestone in providing a great experience for X Train customers."

The reason they state Daggett is because that is the extent of the Union Pacific right of way. The X-Train will start from Fullerton and travel up BNSF's Cajon Pass line (and Southern Transcon) to the Daggett junction. X-Train still needs to sign an agreement with BNSF, but they are much more conducive to passenger rail operations than the UP is.
