Oiling was done at night. The oil sold in the surf shop did help remove the wax because you didn't want wax build-up, but it was more than that. There was a benefit to having the oil sort of soak into the board overnight.

Apparently modern boards aren’t & haven’t been for a long time so apparently that’s why it sounds odd.

No, No, No. My board was a fiber board. Actually fiber and foam. I think wooden boards were like 100 years ago. Maybe our expert 80 year old surfer can tell us.

Anyway it had something to do with the board drying out. Supposedly oiling and letting it soak in overnight helped prevent that, or maybe delay that. The oil also helped remove the wax to prevent build up. You also looked for cracks as you were oiling and caring for the board. Cracks in the fiberglass, would lead to the foam inside getting wet and when it dried out, it would expand and create even more cracks.

I wish the search functionality went through the whole history of posts on here but it appears to trim on some level. I can't find the original surfboard or shuffler thread so we could clear up what was said initially. There is one thread with 117 pages of posts. I could spend a full day looking for this shit.

I don't know anything about surfboards but I recall that if one did some sort of basic web search on surfboards then some weird SEO post came up at the top talking about oiling surfboards but it didn't actually appear to be a thing.
