I always thought you had to be laid off in order to collect unemployment? Perhaps it's a state-by-state thing?
I don't think it applies to the current situation but I have some experience with filing for and drawing unemployment. I filed in Alaska a few times over the years. If you lose your job through no fault of your own you are eligible for unemployment from day one. If you quit your job there is a six week penalty and then you are eligible. Sometimes I would have to wait out the six weeks before getting the checks. What this means is that instead of being eligible for 6 months of unemployment I was eligible for just 4.5 months.

One year I quit a job in Alaska. And I filed for unemployment in Washington. Their laws were different. If you lose your job through no fault of your own you are eligible from day one. But if you quit your job you are not eligible for unemployment at all. They told me I had to go back to work for 7 weeks to be eligible for unemployment again.

WHEN FILING FOR UNEMPLOYMENT YOU ARE GOVERNED BY THE LAWS OF THE STATE YOU FILED IN. I never made the mistake of quiting a job, no matter which state I worked in, then filing for unemployment in Washington again. Sometimes I worked in Washington then filed for the unemployment in Alaska. They couldn't deny me because I was under Alaska law.

I found out about 1992 that Nevada had the same law as Alaska. It was just a six week penalty. So I started filing in Nevada too.
