    Dr. Tello's advice to patients who want to try some form of structured fasting is to start with a healthy Mediterranean, plant-based diet. Get rid of any over-reliance on red meat or processed carbohydrates first.

    Next, cut out snacking as much as possible.

    “Give your body time to stop digesting your previous meal before embarking on your next meal. Otherwise, your body never taps into the energy stored in your fat cells,” she said. “I tell people, 'Just eat three meals a day.' People look at me like I'm nuts.”

    The final step is to extend the number of hours during which you fast by ditching any late-night snacks and postponing breakfast. That lengthens by several hours the fasting that occurs naturally during sleep.

    “I just sort of stumbled into this pattern myself, and it works. And now I know why,” she said. Have coffee or tea in the morning, get busy with work, then eat the day's first meal several hours later than a traditional breakfast. After dinner, the kitchen is closed; no late-night snacks.

    “That's really doable for many people,” she said. “For physicians who are busy, this works great.”
    This is, essentially, what I, too, do. I don't think that, decades ago, there was any other way than trial and error to arrive at something like this. Just what seems to work.

    It's been long known that half starving small animals can increase their lives by relatively large fractions, but, in humans what happens is the brain requires the protein from the muscles. First go the muscles, then the brain, itself. World war 2 results of prisoners in Germany.

    The last time I asked my doctor about it, about four years ago, the day he had a young substitute doctor, the substitute told me that, really, nobody, still, knows what to eat, when. The obvious restrictions depend on a person's health in general and specific. In fact, some persons do good on diets that lead to higher blood-sugar levels, and, so on. As for eating over the course of an hour, what comes to my mind, from the last time I read about it, there is a second shot of insulin, after about forty minutes, which can be quite harmful (to the body) on its own. So, eat, well within the forty minutes, or continue eating, well past the hour.

    As with anything, intermittent fasting can have a downside. If you are interested in intermittent fasting or currently practicing it, be aware that there can be some drawbacks. Here are a few you should be cognizant of:

    Orthorexia. Intermittent fasting could lead to disordered eating behaviors, such as orthorexia, which is defined as an obsession with proper or “healthy” eating. Symptoms include the need to talk about your diet constantly, and a preoccupation with what you will eat next. If you notice that your diet has become inflexible—so much so that you avoid or cancel social events because they are not consistent with your eating habits—take heed and consider switching to another dieting method.

    Disrupted sleep. Although not eating before bedtime improves your ability to get to sleep, researchers have also shown that intermittent fasting may disrupt your sleep cycle by decreasing the amount of REM sleep you get. REM sleep is important for memory, mood, and learning capacity.

    Decreased alertness. While intermittent fasting has been shown to increase alertness, when done over the long term, it can decrease it. This is simply due to the fact that your body is not getting enough fuel and, therefore, incapable of producing enough energy. Fasting can lead to fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and even dizziness.

    Increased guilt. Breaking your fast or missing your fasting window by eating either too early or too late could cause anxiety and/or shame. Be alert for these feelings, as they may be signs of something larger, such as disordered eating.

    ADVERTISEMENT - SCROLL TO KEEP READING

    Increased cortisol levels. Since fasting is a stress on the body—similar to exercise—it can increase your cortisol levels, especially when you deprive yourself of food for longer periods. Cortisol is the body’s stress hormone, and increased levels are associated with increased stress as well as fat storage.

    Higher LDL levels. In metabolically healthy obese adults who did alternate-day fasting in one randomized clinical trial, researchers found significantly increased LDL levels by month 12 compared with those who engaged in regular daily calorie restrictions.

    Pancreatic damage. In a study presented at the 2018 annual meeting of the European Society of Endocrinology, Brazilian researchers found that, after a 90-day regimen of alternate-day fasting, lab rats lost weight, but lost muscle and gained stomach fat as well. Further, pancreatic changes suggested an increase in the risk of diabetes.

    Although researchers seem to be making strides, the long-term effects of intermittent fasting are still largely unknown. Keep this in mind if you are thinking of incorporating intermittent fasting into your lifestyle, and when your patients ask for your counsel. And, if you’re going to practice or recommend intermittent fasting, note that there is a safe and healthy way to do so.
    Although not formally recognized in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, awareness about orthorexia is on the rise. The term ‘orthorexia’ was coined in 1998 and means an obsession with proper or ‘healthful’ eating. Although being aware of and concerned with the nutritional quality of the food you eat isn’t a problem in and of itself, people with orthorexia become so fixated on so-called ‘healthy eating’ that they actually damage their own well-being.

    WARNING SIGNS & SYMPTOMS OF ORTHOREXIA:

    Compulsive checking of ingredient lists and nutritional labels

    An increase in concern about the health of ingredients

    Cutting out an increasing number of food groups (all sugar, all carbs, all dairy, all meat, all animal products)

    An inability to eat anything but a narrow group of foods that are deemed ‘healthy’ or ‘pure’

    Unusual interest in the health of what others are eating

    Spending hours per day thinking about what food might be served at upcoming events

    Showing high levels of distress when ‘safe’ or ‘healthy’ foods aren’t available

    Obsessive following of food and ‘healthy lifestyle’ blogs on Twitter and Instagram

    Body image concerns may or may not be present

    you would think with what the nursing gives them - about 2,000 calories per day that they would lose - you would think that it's not nearly enough calories to maintain a 300+ pound weight
    but they don't lose weight - because they're sedentary

    it's necessary to be concerned about your metabolism
    running or fast walking or aerobics, where you are causing yourself to pant and sweat will increase your metabolism and aid you in losing weight

    unless it is an extreme reduction
    and if it is extreme it will be very difficult to keep it up
    and very difficult not to revert back to old habits and gain the weight back again

    the focus needs to be on both reducing calorie intake and increasing metabolism
    foods high in fiber - such as beans and other fresh vegetables make you feel full and can assist in reducing caloric intake

    You contradicted yourself in your own post.

    Calories are absolutely all that matters. If the fatass in the nursing home has a basal metabolic rate sedentary of 1500 calories and you feed them 2000 per day. Then they will gain a pound of fat per week. If you feed them 1000 then the fatass would lose a pound of fat every week.

    It really is that simple.

    The first thing a person needs to do is determine their individual BMR. Then construct a diet plan to meet their goals based on that. If that is to restrictive then you need to increase your metabolism thru activity.

    .........................

    the point is that for many people reducing caloric intake will not be enough to lose weight - which is one of the reasons it seems to be so difficult for so many people
    if they reduce their caloric intake and they are sedentary they may become more sedentary with less food

    but if they combine it with exercise vigorous enough to cause panting and sweating - and it doesn't have to be all that much - fast walking can do it - they will increase their metabolic rate and make it easier to lose without drastic, extreme reductions such as what he posted - 1,000 calories or less per day - which is going to be very, very difficult to maintain

    Max Pen's suggestion to calculate individual BMR (basic metabolic rate) is a good one that most people don't do
    linked is a calculator for that

    The human body is a very complex machine, in regards to how someone ends up shedding weight. There's no one size fits all, I'm certain its not just calories in out, BMR, hormones, age, environment, activity level, sleep quality, nutrition, stress there are MANY deciding factors to the weight loss equation. All calories are NOT equal. Perfect example 200 calories of broccoli or 200 calories of soda, which one will store as fat ? Eating enough sugar and simple carbs, can easily sabotage success, even with adequate calorie reduction.

    ............................

    this is one of the reasons it is so difficult for so many to lose
    these numbers are just for example and are not meant to be accurate:

    a sedentary person who is obese normally consumes 3,000 calories - at 3,000 calories he will maintain, neither gain or lose weight

    he wants to lose weight so he cuts down to 2,000 calories

    in 4 weeks he loses 10 pounds

    now his body needs only 2500 calories to maintain his current weight

    so he is losing weight slower - in 2 months he loses another 10 pounds

    now his body only needs 2,000 calories to maintain his current weight

    he needs to reduce his caloric intake further to lose more

    assuming no vigorous exercise to increase the metabolic rate

    I'm pretty sure all plans and diets work if you follow their strict guidelines.
    One thing is to cut out all empty calories like beer, soda, chips, candy... etc etc.
    Keep hearing good things about the Carnivore Diet and might try it for 30 days down the road.
    The cure is to make a plan that works and continue to constantly follow it.
    It appears when a person hits a plateau or wall for 3 or 4 days of not losing weight you can break that wall through long term fasting (3 days).
    I suppose you could forgo the fasting and increase physical activity as well.
    Either will work to break the wall.
    You can argue that point if you want to as well.

    Day 6
    8/1/2020
    Weight = 266

    Day 6 Intake

    Pushed a longer fasting window at 20 hours.
    Only ate food from 2pm to 4pm and restricted the calories.
    Took a 2 mile walk in the 110 degree heat.

    16 oz Green Smoothie (350)
    Mixed Fruit (125)
    Lima Beans (100)
    30 oz of Carrot Juice (350)
    3 Eggs with Mushrooms and Red Onions (350)

    Total Caloric Intake = 1275

    Running Totals

    Weight Loss = 10lbs
    Daily Average of Calories = 1220
    Daily Sleep Average = 7 hours
    Daily Intermittent Fasting Average = 17.5 hours

    Guess I need to concentrate on BMR and not BMI.
    According to this interweb machine search thingy...
    BMI is a simple indicator of weight for height and can't differentiate between muscle mass and fat mass.
    BMI can no longer be considered a reliable indicator of healthy weight, and further research is needed to identify a suitable alternative.

    Day 7
    8/2/2020
    Weight = 264

    Fasted a bit more as I pushed it to 26 hours.
    Drank over a gallon of water.

    Day 7 Intake

    Sardine Salad (400)
    Vegetable Beef Soup (400)

    Daily Calories = 800

    Running Totals

    Weight Loss = 12lbs
    Daily Average of Calories = 1160
    Daily Sleep Average = 7.5 hours
    Daily Intermittent Fasting Average = 18.7 hours

    I suspect that we (as a country) would be far skinnier/healthier if we did nothing other that limit our liquid calories and fried foods.

    It appears when a person hits a plateau or wall for 3 or 4 days of not losing weight you can break that wall through long term fasting (3 days).
    Everybody hits a plateau/wall eventually with a diet. 2 possible reasons are a) much of the weight you lose at first is due to no longer retaining water because you've reduced sodium intake, and b) your metabolism adjusts to your calorie intake (hence the reasoning behind cheat days). After the initial week or two, you shouldn't expect to lose more than 1-2 pounds per week, unless you're still severely overweight. I wouldn't suggest fasting for three days

    I've found, from doing it, that running six six-minute miles three times a week is about the equivalent to walking four hours a day six times a week, in terms of being able to eat whatever you want, in one meal a day, including pop and chips, jf this is your thing, to maintain a decent weight. Cutting back on physical activity means cutting back on what to eat, means some degree of unhappiness there, means (further) unhappiness with the physical activity.

    Muscle is heavier than fat, so, weightlifting is out, to thin down, and lose weight. I mean, all the unnatural stuff people just "think" they have to do. Gyms are the corniest thing, ever. Processed weight management. And, a bunch of movies equals pop and chips, for both the mind and body. If you want real and actual conspiracies, fill your head with the "cool" stuff of movies. Everything is a breeze in your teens, and twenties. Soon gone, gone, gone, for good. It becomes exponentially harder to re-base, nay, find your mental and physical stride, into your forties and fifties. Along the way, lots of things naturally go wrong with a person's overall and specific health. If you saw your food under a microscope, it would scare the crap out of you. Same as with the minute changes in your body, the aging process, months at a time.

    Likely, eating disorders, including dieting, are the new "schizophrenia" spectrum disorders. It used to be that the upper floors of hospitals were exclusively for hopeless nuts. Now, there are separate floors up there for persons with eating disorders. Better to live an enjoyable life to the fullest, in all respects, as a by-product of doing normal, everyday productive stuff. To live in such a way that by the time it's time for a nursing home, well, you really and actually are ready and prepared to die. The other animals don't sit around waiting to die. One way or the other, they go fast, abruptly.

    Well, the time to (carefully) experiment with your body is when you are young, when you can recover. I don't think that the fucker is going to make it, but, who knows.

    Anyway, here are a few more numbers, to "liven" things up a bit, until the fucker gets down to the nitty-gritty.

    41 is the smallest number such that the sum of its divisors equals three times its reverse:

    1 + 41 = 3 x 14 = (4 - 1) x 14;

    41 is the smallest prime such that the sum of factorials of its distinct digits is a square number: 4! + 1! = 5^2 = [(1 + 1)^0 + 4]^(1 + 1);

    41 has a representation as a sum of two squares:

    41 = 4^2 + 5^2 = 4^(1 + 1) + [(1 + 4)^(1 + 1)];

    41 + 1 is the number of spots on a pair of dice.

    Accused murderess Lizzie Borden allegedly gave her father 41 whacks on Aug. 14, 1892, in Fall River, Mass.

    1892 = 2^2*11*43 = [41 + (1 + 1)]*11*4. These last digits add to 13 = -1 + 14.

    And, 1892 = 1900 - 8 = -(9 - 1) + 1900 ---> 9119.

    There are 41 digits in this number,

    Like half of that post is true lol. Shit Boz hasn’t even said you’re as real as they get and he says that about lots of people, pretty much you’re apparently not as real as mission or boz. But they are supposed to be as real as it gets so nothing to be ashamed of since you can’t get any more real.

    The doctors told me to cut way down on salt. I started reading the labels in the supermarket. I couldn't believe how much salt was in everything. Lunch meat? Packed with salt. Canned beans? Packed with salt. Processed food is packed with salt. I had to cook fresh chicken and fish to avoid salt. I think I'll try the sardines.
    Challenge to redietz. We bet every NFL regular season game. You make the picks. If you lay the fav I get 2 extra points. If you take the dog I get a 2 point discount. Easy pickings for you.

    Thanks for posting!
    Sardines Packed in Water with no added sodium are probably your best choice unless you can get fresh which is near impossible.
    From my understanding it is best to get the ones with bones and skin as you get higher doses of calcium and omega 3s.
    I like mine in a salad or plain with mustard added as mustard is low sodium, low calorie and I just like mustard and or sour.
    I haven't bought any yet but something about whole grain bread is good for you to eat so a sandwich with that isn't a bad choice if you don't mind eating bread.

    I went back to the Juice Fasting Thread that I started nearly two years ago.
    I basically started near the same exact weight.
    At that time I was just under 276.
    This time I was actually just over 276.
    The weight loss has been nearly identically in the first 8 to 9 days.
    During that 30 day period I didn't have any solid foods and I drank about a gallon of juice per day.
    I also drank 1 to 4 liters of water with it.
    So it was around 1800 to 2400 calories per day in the form of Fresh Juice.
    Some don't agree with the large amounts of sugar content from that much juice but I've never had a problem with it.
    (I've also done 3, 7, 11 and 14 day water fasts in my lifetime with no problems other than some headaches and or nose bleeds.)
    In this Intermittent Fasting I have consumed a combination of Fresh Juice with Solid Foods.
    Averaging about 1200 calories per day.
    When you are obese you can lose weight pretty fast in the first week or two.
    The body just eats itself.
    Most of my life I have been skinny and athletic so being obese isn't exactly my body types natural state.
    10+ years of Steak House, Endless Buffets, Cream Everything and Gallons of Ice Cream will do this to you.
    I have been planning to get in shape for some time and finally I woke up on the 27th of July and my mind was ready.
    I want to go to the gym but I figure it isn't worth the headache with the current virus rules.
    I want a rowing machine but I'm on the waiting list and it won't be ready till at least October.
    I could buy a cheaper one or different brand but I am pretty sold on the Concept 2 Machine.
    If I was doing more aerobic exercise the weight would come off faster and I could increase calories.

    People do 60 or 90 day Juice Fasts without problems.
    I've seen documented year long Juice Fasts with no hitches.
    I've seen 90 day Water Fasts.
    There is a woman on Youtube who claims a 120 day water fast.
    When I was in Alaska, working on a Fishing boat, in the 90s, 18 hours on 6 hours off, I realized the human body can take just about anything.
    Jesus did 40 day fasts.
    Moses did 80 day fasts.
    etc etc.
    Honestly my wife is doing something similar alongside me but not as extreme.
    She started at 150lbs and is 5'4.
    She weighed in at 142 today so about a pound a day weight loss for her.

    I've read that 24 hours eating and 24 hours fasting actually works faster.
    If you search alternating fasting on youtube you can see many people lose large amounts of fat very fast.
    According to studies, science and math the alternating fasting shows you will lose an average of 1.5lbs a week compared to 16:8 which only loses about 1/2 a pound per week.
    Individual results will vary.
    Currently I am close to 20:4 with a low calorie restricted daily intake and some of those calories are from juice which is different IMO.
    Mixed in with a couple miles of walking per day.
    Some light work outs only using body weight like squats, push-ups and sit-ups.

    I heard this movie was going to be titled Crazy for You... originally.
    Glad they went with Vision Quest instead.
    I guess I could buy a Jump Rope as that would be cheap and get the cardio up.

    I think that Chocolate Money must get all of his advice from Fox news, and, the popular (idiotic) culture movies. It's like the virus doesn't exist, but, if it does, then HCQ will pound the crap out of it. Lol.

    Water fasting can strain the kidneys and lead to nutrient deficiencies as well. That same muscle wasting that water fasting can trigger can lead to excess protein delivery to the kidneys, which makes these organs have to work harder.

    Other side effects may include fainting, brain fog, fatigue, and in women, alterations in hormone levels if done for a prolonged period, she says. Fainting, brain fog, and fatigue is likely the result of low blood sugar from not eating, notes Harvard Health Publishing.

    One thing about water fasting is for sure: “Because it’s self-imposed starvation, which isn’t a healthy or maintainable way to lose weight, you go back to eating food after the fast and the weight is likely to come back, perhaps even more than before." This can set you up for yo-yo dieting, which wreaks havoc on your metabolism and can have other negative health effects. Even worse? “It can trigger disordered eating in some people.”
    Anyway, it seems as though I left a bit of "meat" on the "bone" with,

    1892 = 2^2*11*43 = [41 + (1 + 1)]*11*4. These last digits add to 13 = -1 + 14.

    And, 1892 = 1900 - 8 = -(9 - 1) + 1900 ---> 9119.
    First off, August is the eighth month, so, we have 8 = 6 + 2, or 2 + 6 = 6 + (1 + 1), or (1 + 1) + 6 ---> 611, or 116.

    Secondly, the above time happened on a Sunday, which has six letters. Fall River has nine. The two digits make,

    96 = 2*48 ---> 2*84 = 42*4 = 168 ---> 1 + 68 = 69.

    Incidentally, 168 = 169 - 1 = 169 - (1 + 1)^0 ---> the D'COVI digits of, 6(101)-19.

    Next, Massachusetts has thirteen letters, and, was the 6th state to enter the union of states.

    August 14, 1892 was the 227th day of the year 1892 in the Gregorian calendar. There were 139 days remaining until the end of the year. The day of the week was Sunday.

    If you are trying to learn French then this day of the week in French is dimanche.

    A person born on this day will be 127 years old today.
    227 = 2*114 - 1 = [(4 + 110) + 114] - 1 = (4 + 110) - 1 + 114 ---> 4111114, again, with five 1's, and two 4's, for a total of 13;

    127 = 13 + 114 = [(4 + 10) - (1 + 1)^0] + 114 ---> 4111114, again, with five 1's, and two 4's, for a total of 13.

    And, 139 = 140 - 1 ---> 141 ---> -1 + 14 = 13.

    Maybe there are, still, other bits to old Lizzie. After another correction, I find that 1892 - 1441 = 451 = 11*41 ---> 1892 = 441 + 1000 + 11*41. Now 441 = 21^2 = (42 / 2)^2.

    Then 1892 ---> 411111111114, with ten 1's. So, if we overlap the 1's of the two ends 411111, and, 111114, whack these out, so to speak, we are back to 4111114, with five 1's, and two 4's, for a total of 13. Ha, too many numbers. Who knows.

    Oh, yes, one other thing, if I recall, the 111th prime is 6:07.

    555 = 111 + 4*111 = 15*37, or 37*15, as 153, and 7, or, 371, and 5. As 153 on 371, to 5/7 left, as 6 +/- 1.

    3/21 to 8/22 is 153 + 1 days. 321 = 107*3 + 0; 123 = 3*71 + 0. To 1/0. 822 = (-1 + 7)(37 + 100); 228 = 57[6 - (1 + 1)], ---> 11411. 15[3^2] = 153 + (5 + 1). 154 days is ~ 42.08% of year 2020. 451 = 11*41^1.
