As a senior in high school in the mid 80's, I remember that our graduating class was so apathetic that one of the other classes (juniors IIRC) won the homecoming float contest which normally the school awards to the senior class (I heard about it from a friend) by default . But since only a very very small percentage of Seniors showed up and participated in making the float and cheering it on, they had no choice but to award it to a different class.
Many people from that era just got on with it - I'm glad I was part of that (fuck participation awards and group think).
