Here's a few articles (from scientific journals) about the increased use of jargon and acronyms making it so that regular reasonably intelligent people are unable to follow along with the scientific articles any more. There are others. If you refuse to speak in a language that non scientists can understand, it would make sense that a possible result of that could be fewer people understanding or respecting the results of the science. Trump may have fanned the flames but there's multiple factors at play here most of which are self inflicted IMO.
