Now, about the SATs. My SATs were not terribly impressive (my girlfriend's brother scored a perfect 800 on the math for comparison). But coming from a little coal region town and little coal region school, my 1450 wasn't shabby. So anyway, when a friend of mine who had a hardscrabble youth wanted to get into a teachers' college, he sat next to me during the SATs at our high school. He was in the row next to me, so theoretically, he had a different form, because the text proctors gave each row a different form (A, B, C, and so on). But he copied from me anyway. When the results came back, he had made a little too steep a leap from his first outing, so first I was called into the office, then he was called later. The guidance counselor was straight with me. He said so-and-so made too steep an improvement, and he saw the seating chart, and how did we do it? What baffled him was that the forms (and questions) were different for my friend and me. Well, the guidance counselor and I both had the light bulb go on at the same time. Despite the different forms, the company grading the tests must have used one answer key. It was the only theory that made sense. You couldn't alter the Form designation on the tests. A was A. B was B. But using one answer key would have been faster and cheaper with minimal errors.

By the way. That friend got into college and became a massive success at what he did. He was kind of a "Welcome Back, Kotter" success story, but he did better than Kotter.

I'm not sure Singer quite grasps how the Wise Guys works. My Wise Guy games were in a national newsletter, sold on newsstands throughout the country for more than 20 years. See, the games were in the newsletter, printed in English, before the games were played. I know -- novel concept. They were in The Playbook newsletter -- sold everywhere, including Las Vegas. My name and email or phone number and at least one of the two plays were in each issue.

Wow. I just read some of the stuff from the Wayback link to my old website. When I finished second in Bally's college football contest in 1999, I had a 78-42 ATS record. That's a helluva record. And I didn't even get to choose from the entire board. Bally's listed 20 contest games each week (out of an actual 50-some) and you had to play 10 of them. That is one helluva record. I remembered I had finished second or third, but I didn't remember my record.

I need to get myself a trophy for that.

P.S. So Rob, are you saying Bally's was part of a conspiracy and they allowed me to pick games after the fact? And are you saying the Bob Dietz in a newsletter sold nationally, with games listed under his name for 20-some years, was somebody else? Or exactly what are you saying, man? The last day I played this year, 2 weeks ago, as a specific "play" was ending, another AP that showed up in the final days to help end that play, came up and started a conversation, asking how I found that play and how long I had been playing it. I gave vague answers. His final comment was "I didn't thing you guys (meaning me and my brother) went after this sort of play". So he knew exactly who I was, as many AP's do.

I just see no reason to meet up with other AP's just to hang out and have a beer. And in this town you never know who will turn on you and at a moments notice. This forum, if anything proves that.
