As far as why the guy's co-worker who was being lavished with gifts turned in his benefactor, we may not be getting the entire story. Maybe the recipient of those gifts received some of the cash this guy was mis-directing, or was in general worried that when the whip came down that he'd be accused of being a part of the whole thing.
If not, then the simple explanation would be that "these people" are an envious lot, and self loathing. We know UNKewlJ definitely is, which is probably why he every now and then even denies being gay, and after discussing the whole thing in nauseating detail denied the whole gay marriage and even existence of his dead "soul mate." So the one gay turned in the other even though he was benefiting from the scam, because he couldn't bear the thought that someone was doing better than he was. We see that all the time with UNKewlJ's going on and on about how so and so could not possibly be doing something, because it conflicts with what UNKewlJ read about in books.
