If I'm not mistaken he's not a failed academic but someone who is eminent in his field (the analysis of actual gambling problems) and probably got invited to do some teaching at the local college. This happens a lot with people that are locally prominent laymen (for example in law or business, or even redietz cherished field of journalism).

Because mickey said those who can't . . . teach. So Shackleford evidently can't, and he's getting paid about a third of what everyone else who can't is getting paid. It was strictly a rejoinder to mickey's brilliance. If you disagree with "those who can't . . . teach," take it up with mickey.

I think it's great that Shackleford has a teaching gig. Maybe he loves to teach. Maybe he needs the bread. Maybe he likes hanging with 19-year-old women. More power to him. Who am I to judge?

Mickey's the one judging "those who teach." Mickey's a little slow on the draw. Maybe "those who teach, double their chances of getting laid."
