I was playing the strip up and down for about 8 hours yesterday afternoon/Evening. There is no one here! Well, no more than any other Thursday in November heading into a non holiday weekend. Possibly the Formula one fans will be arriving today as the race isn't until Saturday. But, my guess is the novelty of F1 in Vegas has already worn off in only the second year. We will see. Id even be interested in the dickhead Dawgs take on it.

I think they signed a multi-year deal. There are other annual events that don't bring in huge crowds, but they bring something to a usually slower period. The difference between that and F1 is the major disruptions it causes. I have to wonder if Vegas is a good fit.

One good thing though, Vegas is treating it like a major event that brings in a lot of people and that means there are more tables open with dealers just looking for someone to play.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the 10 year contract is cancelled after this year by mutual agreement. A few higher end casinos being busy doesn’t make up for the overall decreases at other casinos along with the negative sentiment from citizens.

The details on how much this cost the city will be the stuff of college courses at UNLV in the future. Along with the pictures of the empty paddocks (can we use that word yet?) sitting there. At least it was a reason to tear down the old ICE nightclub that was an eyesore there for years.

No advantage players or real winning players play high limit or reserved tables, because the casinos wouldn't put up with them winning for long and there are too many eyes on the tables. High limit and reserved tables are for long-term losing gamblers like you. Whales and jr whales.

And there is not a single red chip table, that would be $5, $10, $15 minimums on the strip, so you claiming I play red chip when I play on the strip is just another proven lie by you. Will be interesting to see how it does this year. I doubt it was an attraction for your average Vegas tourist and we already know many of the residents/employees weren't too happy. I know I will never get near the strip again until they clean up all the race stuff.

While residents weren't too happy about all the traffic nightmares and detours and stuff, I'll bet a good portion of the people watching the race in person were locals just checking it out. Hell, I got out for a bit just to check it out. Didn't pay for premium seating or anything. If I remember, Druff took his son. And Mdawg was there. But these folks are Las Vegas regulars., even if Druff made a special trip.

What I am really wondering and time will tell, is with the newness of it gone, and locals having already done that, if the F1 "groupies" that follow the sport from town to town and buy merchandise....if that is really enough to sustain it and all the expense. And sustain the casinos for all the investment and inconvenience.

Are the F1 groupie types even gamblers? In another 2 weeks the rodeo people come to town for 2 weekends. And there are ALOT of them. But as a whole they are not big gamblers and they don't stay at the big strip casinos, instead opting for Ellis Island, and South Point, Sam's town type places. I am wondering if it wont turn into that, but with a lot more cost and inconvenience.

Shutting down the strip on a Saturday night is a big deal. It makes it hard for people to get around from casino to casino to gamble. Add in event drawing people outside the casinos and it just seems very counter-productive. At least the Nascar events take place on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, leaving visitors to gamble Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. THAT makes more sense.

Another landmark was the tax revenue generated by the event, with the US$77 million in state and local taxes also the most in Las Vegas history.

Living here, the crowds for not only the weekend, but days leading up to it, the celebrities in town for the Superbowl, dozens (with an s) of all the high end Superbowl parties. Not even in the same ballpark regardless of what numbers the tell you.

There wasn't even room at the airport for all the private jets in days before the Superbowl. They had to fly into Henderson and North Las Vegas.

Stands were empty for the practice races.

We will see if the event itself is full, or if that will also be empty. A listener to my PFA show bought a practice race ticket for under $100 on the secondary market.

Last year I went because I (barely) got room and race comps. This year I had no such thing, so I didn't go. Main reason I even bothered coming into town was because I thought it would be a unique thing for my son to see. I asked him if he was interested, he said yes, so I went. Otherwise I was just going to let the tickets go to waste.

Was almost sorry I did because I shot off $8300 at Ultimate X that night, but then just as I was minutes from quitting, I hit a $2600 quad aces, so I stayed a little longer. Less than 10 minutes after that, I was dealt a 10-way royal and got $64k.

I don't think I'll top that trip.

I guess it could be possible if they included all the stuff they had to build/modify the first time they did it. But now that the supporting infrastructure is more or less ready to go, no way it brings in more revenue than the Superbowl... that's just silly.

Thurday night I was out for 8 hours on the strip and the strip and casinos seemed empty. Mdawg reports the opposite. I said possibly people would be coming in Friday or Saturday, but at that point in time, interest seemed low. And except for Mdawg, I haven't heard anyone else say anything but that crowds and attendance seems way down from last year.

Despite living a block or two from the course, last night I watched just a few minutes of the practice run on TV. That is the level of interest I had. Two blocks and I watched on TV for a few minutes. And I only watched because I wanted to see if people were there. I remember there was pretty good attendance for the practice runs last year. I just didn't see that in the few minutes I watched. really seems like the novelty of F! has worn off. But we'll see about the race tonight and what they say afterwards about attendance and revenue. But anyone telling me this event is bringing in more revenue and people than the superbowl, well somebody is lying. Probably the people at the tourist and visitors centers, and not MrV or anyone posting their claims.

I will be out tonight, on the strip, but my focus will be on playing blackjack. It just might be a great time to play, with extra tables open and some of the people out on the strip watching. THAT is what I am hoping for out of this event.

I was also thinking along those lines. Created jobs, and that creates revenue. To me if you had to build everything they had to build and even buy up some property last year, that should go under 'costs', not "revenue'. But whatever. There just aren't the people and level of excitement (or curiosity) of last year and there is no way this event is bringing more money to Vegas that the superbowl. But for us that reside here, we have the same level of headaches.
