Post 1218 in the "Smart Money" thread was timed perfectly, as I suspected it would be. For those who don't follow such things, here's what The Riddler had to say:
Riddle me This:
From the Land of Hanging Kickers
Who Couldn't Kick Out the Stool
And Pummeling the Man in Red
Because He was a Fool.
To the Land Where Dawgs are Barking
Where Misdirections Live
The Snapping Meets the Soaring
And Something's Gotta Give.
So, if you figured this out when it was posted and bet accordingly, congrats. You got the best of the numbers by far. It's still a longshot, but now the odds are cut in half or thereabouts, so The Riddler nailed it.
For those who require a walk-through:
When ranked Penn State met ranked Pitt in 1975, PSU prevailed in awful conditions 7-6. The Pitt kicker, who went on to an NFL career, missed a FG and had a FG and PAT blocked. When interviewed after the game, he said, "Well, I'd hang myself, but I probably couldn't kick the stool out."
In 1968, when I was 11, the Eagles played a cold weather game and were favored. It had snowed heavily, and score was, alas, 7-7 at half. As part of the halftime show, Santa Claus and his reindeer came onto the field, and were loudly booed and pelted with snowballs and ice balls. He had to retreat.
So "The Land" in the first stanza is Pennsylvania, with Pitt at one end and Philadelphia on the other.
"In the land where Dawgs are barking" refers to the inimitable Mdawg. "Where Misdirections Live" refers to kewlJ and his habit of referring to bald lies as "misdirection." So the location being referenced in the second stanza is Las Vegas, which hosts the next Super Bowl.
Where Snapping (the Terrible Towels) meets Soaring (Eagles) wraps it up.
So the recommendation was to bet the Eagles and Steelers to meet in the Super Bowl (if you're monet and into parlays) or bet them individually to win their respective conferences.
The Riddler timed it correctly, as the Eagles and Steelers were the only underdogs to win outright this week, shaping home field and dramatically affecting their SB odds.
The Riddler has left the building.
