Thread: Another Vegas area journalist killed -- this time by crazy roommate

  1. #1
Remember when Clark County Public Administrators office head Robert Telles murdered longtime Las Vegas Review Journal reporter Jeff German, because Telles blamed German for losing the last election?

German had covered the mob and other dangerous subjects as far back as the '80s, and never suffered as much as a scratch from doing so. Then a civil servant ended up murdering him. Who could've seen that coming?

Well, another Vegas journalist is now dead, and this time it's not related to his work.

Matt Kelemen, a 56-year-old freelance journalist in Vegas, was murdered by his 63-year-old roommate on May 16.

Kelemen had primarily worked for Las Vegas Magazine, which you've undoubtedly seen in Vegas hotel rooms, as they claim that 98% of hotel rooms in the city have a copy of the magazine. It is almost entirely advertorials -- articles meant to look like objective entertainment coverage, but in reality advertising a restaurant, show, or other Vegas venue. The articles are apparently post-dated at least a week, as Kelemen wrote this article dated "May 23, 2025", despite having been dead for 7 days!

His body was discovered in a scene reminiscent of Jeffrey Dahmer.

On May 19, Kelemen's roommate, Joseph Del Rivo, showed up at a business with a large black box, and claimed he or someone else would be back within a week to pick it up. The business was located in downtown LV, and was not identified. It was NOT a storage facility, but rather one which had listed itself on the Bounce app, which allows people to temporarily store luggage or other items at businesses which are otherwise not storage facilities.

Despite claiming he'd be back in a week, Del Rivo sent movers down to the business to pick up the box the following day, May 20. Similar to the Dahmer situation, people smelled the decomposing body and got suspicious, and police were called. The moving company told Del Rivo that the box "could not be moved" (it's unclear what they said to him), which of course raised his suspicion that police were onto him.

Del Rivo was seen speeding that same night, May 20, on I-70 in Utah, in a mostly uninhabited area in Sevier County. This area is roughly north of Capitol Reef National Park and west of Arches National Park. At the time, Utah Highway Patrol authorities did not realize the driver was a murder suspect, but were simply trying to pull him over for speeding, as he was going over 90 mph. When Del Rivo wouldn't stop, they chased him, and he sped up to 140mph to get away. They put down spike strips to disable his car. He hit the first spike strip but was able to keep driving for 3 miles. His car flipped and caught fire when he attempted to avoid the second strip. He was ejected from the vehicle and died instantly.

It is likely he didn't realize he was being pulled over for speeding, and believed the cops were behind him to arrest him for the murder.

Some might read this story and ask...

Was this actually gay domestic violence?

After all, Kelemen was living with a male within 7 years of his age, there was some kind of altercation which was serious enough for the roommate to end up murdering him, and Kelemen was listed as "single with no children" at the age of 56.

Despite all appearances, the answer appears to be no.

Kelemen had only been living with Del Rivo for 6 months, and complained to his sister that the guy was "weird" and a "complete slob". Kelemen had revealed that he was afraid to confront Del Rivo about how disgusting he kept the house, fearing Del Rivo might go off and attack him, but decided to do so anyway. That was the last his sister heard from him.

Therefore, it appears not to have been a situation where one gay lover killed another, but rather just someone choosing to live with a housemate who was bizarre and slovenly, and then getting killed for speaking up about it.

The moral of the story? Don't live with crazy people.

Have the police questioned Stephen A Smith?

    Dahmer-like,eh?

    Cannibalism?

I cannot recognize the car the killer was driving: probably not a Yaris, doing 140 mph.

By the way, this Matt Kelemen is not related to the "Matthew Kelemen" who is currently one of the top managers at Omni Casino, a longtime online casino site.

I actually had a small association with the Omni Casino in the mid-2000s, as its poker site, called Caribbean Sun Poker, was one where I played a ton of hands. Eventually I got to know the owner of Omni/Sun Poker, and even was over at his house when I visited Antigua. I'm not sure if the same person owns it. At the time, I did not know any Mathew Kelemen involved there. Must be more recent. But I found it to be a weird coincidence when I googled the name.

Druff, how much of your free time is spent pondering and judging others lives? Closer to 90% of your thoughts or closer to 99%?

My first (and last) roommate in Las Vegas was a ninja. I'd like to say I'm exaggerating, but I'm really not. I knew something was up when the bulletin board in the kitchen had photos of a kid about nine years old holding up trophies, nunchuks, and a sword. The kid, of course, was him. Anyway, I was able to beat him playing one-on-one hoops outside the old fire station across from what was then Bally's (post-fire). A tale for another day. He could do stuff athletically I still don't halfway believe.

No cannibalism, but Dahmer's story involved a terrible smell from all the bodies he was storing in his apartment. There were several missed opportunities to bust him, despite many (including two police officers) noticing the smell, and other suspicious behavior. Dahmer was only caught after one of his victims was able to escape and alert police that he had been held against his will.

Judging? This is a major Vegas news story.

The story also becomes a little bit different if it was domestic violence within a gay relationship, rather than a psycho killing his roommate over a dispute having to do with cleanliness. I believe this one was the latter.

Just my luck I'm eating Chinese food and people are talking about Dahmer. Is this really beef and broccoli? Lol.

I REALLY hate to say this, but the Victim looks like a creepy and disturbing Serial Killer in the picture you posted of him. RIP to him however. What happened to him was a horrific case of no good deed going unpunished. He was being nice and allowed someone he got bad vibes from to live with him and he got murdered for his kindness. His Murderer got his justice and karma, dying himself VERY shortly after the murder after fleeing after police were chasing him for an unrelated thing.
Take comfort in the fact that no one is actually backing up his wishes to have you permanently banned.

karen, this could be your one shot at the brass ring: as a struggling writer you could take this tale of woe and polish, embellish and curse it as only you can do, then ride it to fame, fortune and a movie deal.

Forget Axl and Darryl: move fast, opportunity is fleeting.

That does actually sound like a decent idea. Confronting the man about the mess did lead to chaos ensuing, but we don't know the actual reason. It could really fill volumes, almost as much filth as the man lived in.

You shouldn't have said this. There are many billions of people and they're all so unique. It is unfathomable for anyone to really understand how all these different lives intersect.

While this story interests me zero %, that demolished vehicle looks like a Ford Ranchero or Chevy El Camino.

in 2023 there were 24,849 murders in the U.S.

it works out to average about 68 murders per day

prolly only about 3% or so of these murders ever even get reported in the media

for a murder to garner a news report I believe one of these things has to happen:

it was a murder in an area generally considered to be very safe such as a suburb or small town

the victim was wealthy or somewhat famous as in Dan's story

the victim was murdered in an unusual way

the murder incident involved more than one victim

I see you edited the first two sentences of your second post.

It was…”.odd” that you thought most probably would assume he’s gay rather than freelance journalism for free magazines not paying enough to have his own place in a major city.

To me made it seem more likely than not you spend an inordinate amount of time pondering random assumptions/judgments about folks with limited info after seeing that.

Here’s a picture of the car from the front.

Maybe some of you can identify it that way,
