Double murder in front of Bellagio fountains due to beef between YouTubers

Druff, no doubt will get around to posting this news account of the shooting in front of Bellagio last night. But I wanted to make a mention right here, this shooting involved social media people that were feuding. Just what I was talking about several days earlier.

Social media and by extension internet forums fuel feuds, hate and anger that all too often spills out into real life violence and shootings. It isn't all just fun and games.

DgenBen, if this were true, I would agree that there is some value in that. But not only do I think this is not true, I think it is the opposite effect.

Hate and intolerance grows rapidly on social media of which I include internet forums (at least an extension of). Almost any time there is some horrific incident, shooting, multiple shooting of someone that is related to them being part of a group, Jews, Gays, ect, there is a direct connection to social media and internet participation. It is one of the first things police investigate when looking for a motive.

The internet and particularly the social media aspect of it (including forums) is...in my opinion, one of the worst things that could have come along.

(1) It allows people to talk and act in a manor they wouldn't have dared done so 20+ years ago.
(2) It allows people to connect with other like-minded folks and unfortunately that includes people festering hate and bigotry towards other groups of people
(3) And unfortunately, finding other like-minded people offers some support, whether real or imagined, for some to take shit off-line and do some of the things that hit the news almost everyday.

I guess the 2 words that best describe this are tribalism and demonization. You demonize those not in your tribe (in any way different than you) and that provides justification for shit that would be completely unacceptable 20 years ago. Not everybody of course, but those with any sort of issue, it feeds and fuels that issue.

We are just heading in the wrong direction.

I don't understand or in any way "get" this weird subculture of influencers and their followers. Really don't get the followers. Why does someone want to spend their life, watching what other people are doing like that? And it isn't even interesting. again...just weird to me.

That said, The guy that was doing nothing but trolling is now dead. I don't feel bad for him.

We have a guy on this forum (several actually) that do nothing but troll. Contribute nothing else. I wouldn't mind seeing the same outcome for them. Maybe in front of Cosmo would be more fitting.

You do everything you accuse others of when it suits your purpose: racial slurs, threats, threatening to shoot or stab people, threatening to dox people, repeating embellishments or outright lies about others over and over. Man, I'm old and I grew up with old school religious/superstitious parents who drilled into me that you should never publicly make fun of people in this manner. You're inviting the wrath of the God they believed in. Like if you told someone their face looks like a burnt frozen pizza Mom would say you'll get hit by a car for saying that cuz God likes to spite people. I think nowadays parents tell their kids about "inside thoughts" and "outside thoughts" or whatever religious-free language is au courant.
