Thread: Momofuku (yes, that's a real name) at Cosmo is now charging $1 per person for tap water

If you can't read the above menu, at the bottom right corner it says:

We proudly serve Vero Water for our guests to enjoy.

Please note there will be a $1 per person charge for unlimited water during your table service.

Vero Water significantly reduces the food miles and pollution associated with imported bottled water, leaving nearly a zero carbon footprint.

I have two words for this: Bull and Shit.

First off, in case you're not familiar with Vero Water, it's a filtration system. You can buy it for your house. It's not bottled, but rather just filters existing tap water.

It's not even legal to sell tap water, though some places get around it by charging you for the cup (though you have to be able to keep the cup in that case). Here the legality is questionable because they're selling you tap water and you aren't getting to keep anything tangible. They can claim they're charging you for the filtration, but that already gets iffy. But let's say it's legal, which it might be (my preliminary research says it is legal in Nevada).

This is really obnoxious, and the phony environmentalism associated with it is even more obnoxious. It's one thing if they simply charge the money and say filtered water is part of their service, and that's that. However, to claim it's for reasons of "leaving zero carbon footprint" is hilarious, and is akin to ordering 4 Big Macs and 3 french fries at McDonald's, but washing it down with a Diet Coke to cut down on calories.

Restaurants in general leave a big carbon footprint, especially when it comes to the washing of the mass number of dishes they generate. The typical restaurant meal will generate far more dishes needing to be washed per person than a meal at home. Some of this is due to presentation, and some is due to sanitation. There's also a large carbon footprint from the acquiring of supplies and food for the restaurant (which they laughably refer to as "food miles" in their statement). If they were serious about this extreme environmentalism, they would simply close all of their restaurants for the environment's sake. And if they really felt this strongly about the pollution generated by bottled water, they could simply take a stand by refusing to serve it, and instead serve filtered water for free. Instead, they're hitting each table with a $1/pp surcharge for tap water -- far more than the cost of the filtering itself.

Look, if you want to make more money, I get it. That's fine. But don't try to pretend I'm paying more because you care about the earth.

Momofuku (which fittingly has the words "fuk u" in the name) has several locations, and the Vegas version is in the Cosmo.

Completely agree, it should be legal. I just sent an email to Dina.
I'm wishing I had circled back and grabbed it as soon as I got to my vehicle.

Naturally people that visit one of the priciest resorts in an artificial city built in the middle of a desert are going to be concerned about their “carbon footprint”

I mean they have to dress it up some way. What else is there?

For those of you who are less traveled because you haven't the resources to travel due to losing while gambling--and/or you lead going nowhere/been nowhere/do nothing lives.....momo refers to a very popular Chinese appetizer (steamed dumplings) and fuk u (more commonly spelled Fuk Yew in Taiwan, China, Malaysia, and Singapore) is a name. Like Joe Smith.

Obviously, some yuppie who thought he was being as smart as some of the eccentrics around here think they are, was thirsty for attention.

    Uh literally anything.

Surcharge for their water bill, donation to wildfire victims in SoCal, clean water surcharge for thirsty kids in Africa, surcharge for extra security to keep hookers from sticking Rolexes up their hootchies.

    Literally anything.

Pretentious assholes who disguise their greed as social consciousness really disgust me.

Like, I have instant hatred for such people. Can't these retards just slightly raise prices overall and give the water free?

That would be fine. This isn't.

Disagree. They would then be lying and pocketing the $$. That's worse.

A McDonald's near one of my local Casinos charged me 60 cents for a cup of water. :/ Fast Food Restaurant water is usually FREE. :/ I was disgusted and didn't go back to that McDonald's. :/
Take comfort in the fact that no one is actually backing up his wishes to have you permanently banned.

If you are buying food it should be free, but if all you want is a cup of water I remember even going back to the 1980s that they would charge you at least something since you’re using up one of their cups & an employees time.

I was buying a burger, soda, and fries. No good reason to charge me .60 for a cup of water. :/

If you bought a soda, why did you need a cup of water too?

Soda isn't hydrating. Water is. Soda is for sweetness, water is for hydration.

Here's a money saving suggestion: forget soda.

Have BOTH sweetness and hydration at the same time: pour a sugar packet into your water.

    You can thank me later.

It is funny when people sit at a restaurant, they may order a drink such as cola and water with lemon, but going to a drive through, you usually don't bother. Probably because there are limited places to place cups in a car safely and reliably.

A waiter got mad when his Customer made a lemonade for FREE by asking for a lemon with their salad, a water, and a pack of sugar. The Customer squeezed the lemon into the water and put the sugar in, making a free lemonade. Waiter was PISSED.

This happened where I worked long ago. The server got mad because the patrons were doing this to save the cost of a drink and I specifically remembered her being angry because they were doing this and were black. She didn't like blacks and didn't like her tips she had gotten from blacks. It was an expensive buffet with table service for some things, some didn't tip much because the customers served themselves their own food.

I am black and wouldn't want to be served by a racist Waitress. I also wouldn't be making a free lemonade that way either though. A lemonade is probably around $4 at the most, plus you get free refills, making free lemonade that way is honestly low class and cheap.

I remember a Starbucks Barista saying her Customers ask her for a shot of espresso and ice for about $2 and go to the condiments bar and putting free cream and sugar into their cup, making a $2 latte when a latte is around $7. She at first thought,"That's a genius way to save around $5 for what is essentially the same thing, but now I think,"That's low class and cheap!"
