Knowing an assassin’s motive is always important for many reasons but the top two being prevention & punishment.

Prevention is obvious but as far as punishment, someone who commits an assassination due purely to because they are mentally ill may receive a sentence of institutionalized & may at some point even be qualified for parole.

Someone who commits an assassination purely for political reasons would be more likely to receive life without parole or the death penalty.

So yes, motive does matter. A lawyer should know that.

I wasn't real familiar with Charlie Kirk before the shooting last week. I had a vague idea of his political views and they were too extreme for me.

But I have grown very sad watching coverage in the last week. For one thing he was a young man with a young family and kids.

But what is really troubling to me is the demonization on both sides of the political spectrum, where some (sick) people think it is ok to shoot or engage in violence with people they don't agree with political views. Everyone has a right to express their views, even someone like a Charlie Kirk that I don't agree with.

I wish we could somehow turn down the heat and the demonization of people who don't share your views or politics. But I fear we are way past that happening now.

Of course he had a "motive:" ALL killers do; but "motive" is meaningless unless acted upon; for example, I very much dislike Trump, the man, so I'd arguably have some form of undigested "motive" but I am disciplined and law-abiding enough not to allow my animus to act out: unlike the Mormon Moron I'd never attempt to threaten or actually hurt Trump or anyone or any thing else I find reprehensible / intolerable.

But I see lots more trouble coming on the horizon, given the politicization and dumbing down of America and the deterioration of morality and guardrails.
