Mr. V it could turn into a slipperily slope type deal.
One day you’re reporting on registrations & the next day you are reporting on “hate speech”, disloyalty to whichever political party is currently in power, & anti (insert whichever ethnic group, religious group, or political group is currently in favor) views.
Did you know that the DARE to keep kids off drugs program started innocently enough as drug education to school kids but actually ended with kids informing on their parents to the police for things like smoking pot at home?
All of that DARE and "Just Say No" shit was going on while I was in middle and high school in the '80s. I was aware of it, but I ignored it, as did every other kid I knew. And I didn't even do drugs.
It was invented by LAPD Police Chief Darryl Gates (remember him?) for the LA Unified School District -- a crap district both then and now. Fortunately I wasn't in that district. When my parents moved to southern California in 1973, and their only child at the time was 1-year-old me, they were smart enough to refuse to buy in any area served by LAUSD. They already knew about the fail, years before they had elementary school aged kids.
But yeah I totally get your point, and I agree. Government snitch programs are not good when it comes to fees, taxes, or victimless crimes.

Cheech & Chong’s Seargent Stadanko routine. Standanko is giving a speech to school kids about turning in drug dealers.
So one kid says “I wanna snitch on Billy! He sold me some shit that wouldn’t get a fly high.”
Druff, let us know when you receive redietz’ credit score.
I get it. In the movie they try to nab drug users by getting them to turn in their drug dealers . In real life, Cops did a sting where they tried to nab drug users by claiming they were doing a free drug cleaning. A drug addict fell for the sting and gave the police her drugs to clean and ... She got arrested for drug possession. Posters said something like,"What kind of IDIOT gives the Cops drugs to clean for them?" Other Posters said something like,"Clearly get drug addiction was clouding her common sense. I actually feel bad for her. She looks to be only about 25 and might have at least one child who depends on her and is going to have to face having a Mother who is in jail."

Would be strange a drug user would think their drugs were laced with poison.
A drug dealer & / or any drug supplier that laced their drugs with poison would have a tough time staying in business as all their customers would die, so not only no repeat business, but no referral business either.
I'm with you more or less but it is worse in some MAGA states. For example - https://www.npr.org/2022/07/11/11077...ion-bounty-law
Your "snitch" program isn't much more than a hotline. There isn't much new outside of a streamlined way to complain about someone breaking the law. It isn't' incentivizing directly.
That law in TX is completely bonkers - especially given their claim of wanting a "small government". 10x worse. (hi Kewl) I wonder if it has been used successfully yet or will be appealed in some manner. Mdawg, you reading this? Can you give us some of your expertise?
But hey, I bet a lot of those TX types who support this also complain about CA for all sorts of reasons they were told to complain about.
People driving without plates isn't acceptable. Like ... at some points people are in a tough spot and don't have the resources but being able to drive around anonymously and such isn't compatible with having safe highways and societies.
Late to this thread but the police do not enforce expired tags (including the "temporary" ones from newly acquired vehicles) in Las Vegas (source: my experience plus posters in r/lasvegaslocals). Consequently there are *lots* of drivers here who never pay for their tags (which I believe is a major source of revenue in a state with no income tax).
Also there is no automated or systematic attempt to check for insurance.
I think this is relevant context because it's not like this informant program is being added onto a system that was already functioning reasonably well.
Chill out, coach.
DGenBen is just sparring / playing with Tasha: they've an established "give and take" where he uses her often silly comments as a springboard for a yuk or two.
What, you don't ever laugh at your fellow humans?
