Did he know he was going to lose?
If he wasn't feeling well he should have stayed home. If he was distracted because of a health concern he should have stayed home. If he felt uneasy because of the drive perhaps he shouldn't have sat down at the table?

But I understand he has to gamble to earn his money. But at some point you have to say "it's not clicking today" so let me try again tomorrow.
