Thread: Boyd Restricts "Young at Heart"

  1. #1
I just got a report that the new Boyd accountants have restricted the "Young at Heart" program to a few zip codes. Out-of-staters are now not eligible, ostensibly due to $2 million in comp payouts to out-of-state Young at Hearters last year.

Not sure what to make of this. Two million in comp payouts is free play and food comps, so I'm not sure what the actual loss might be. I probably play 70% of my Boyd on Young at Heart days, so that would end for me. I simply shift my play to the odd multiplier day and reduce it. I have no issue with not playing.

One thing it does point out is that those over 50 who restricted their play to Young at Heart days and other heavy promo days were "doing the correct thing" in that they were doing what the casino did not want them to do.

That is one maxim Rob Singer has correct.

Redietz, 2 days ago Jean Scott reported that Boyd received a hailstorm of complaints then reversed their decision. YAH is back to the same rules as before March 1. Out of towners are back qualified.

Mrs. Scott posted an update on the Frugal Vegas blog with regards to the Young At Heart called "Miracles Do Happen"

    Yeah that's some miracle.

    Are you people for real?

Okay, Rob, let's hear your critique. Are you suggesting they had no real intention of dropping the program? That the program simply sucks in addicts with free food and 5X points that puts the project into positive territory?

None of that matters to me. I'm ahead lifetime playing video poker, and I'm ahead lifetime (30 years) at Boyd partly thanks to this program. And I don't count the 20 or so free rooms a year and such towards the positivity. That's 400 room nights over the last 20 years, Rob. And I don't even count them. I also don't count the dozen or so free meals a year I get at Boyd thanks to the program. That's 240 free meals over 20 years (I did the math for you, Rob). It would be more, but I eat twice a day on Young at Heart days, not three times.

If I were a local, that meal tally would be 100 a year.

I'll be staying at three different Boyd properties at the end of the month. For some reason, they offered me a lot of free rooms many different places this summer. I don't grasp the rhyme or reason, but I'll take them. Last time I did the Young at Heart thing, I was told by the booth person that it might take forever to qualify for the free meals playing video poker, but if I ran a few bucks through on a slot machine, that would do it. I haven't been to the Sun Coast in years, but they gave me rooms for many different weeks in July/August, so I'll camp there for a few nights.

The Suncoast is choked full of EV slots

I would say it's considerably below the median for an LV casino of its size.

You may not be familiar with some games as Crimm, Paul, and myself are.

    That's one possible explanation.

Actually to be fair the problem is more the lack of play than the lack of machines.

Traditionally, there were 2 periods that were considered very slow for Vegas. 1.) is the 2nd and 3rd weeks of December, from right after the National Rodeo leaves town until Christmas Eve. This is still the slowest time of the year. Some Shows and even restaurants close up.

The second slow period was July and August for obvious reasons....about 110 to 115 obvious reasons. However, in recent years things have changed a bit regarding the summer months, especially in regards to the strip and downtown touristy areas. This period is no longer as dead as it used to be and those deep discounted rooms aren't as deeply discounted anymore.

However off-strip, which is what the Boyd properties are, this is still a very slow period. The older crowd, that visits Vegas 3-4 times a year doesn't come during July-August. So off-strip properties like Boyd, deeply discount rooms, and free rooms are at the top of the give-away list to out-or towners, that is those with an out of town mailer address. So that is the first offer you will get free rooms. Even before free meals and certainly before free play offer. The rooms are there. Doesn't cost them much give them away, just whatever they pay the cleaning girls. I am sure the logic is that give someone from out of town a free room and if they go to the trouble to travel, they will spend something.
