    Not much Casino.
Not any Talk at all --- it's all typing, which is probably half the problem.

To use LarryS's analogy, but properly, if you're at a party and you hear somebody make what you feel fairly sure was meant as a private or semi-private remark regarding religion, but everybody in the room can hear it, do you call the guy out?

Maybe on the internet you do. At the party, not likely, unless you're up for fisticuffs and wrecking the party.

And I'm stridently non-religious, in case anybody's wondering. But not that stridently as to wreck a party.
the "party" is your discussion point, not mine.
I never mentioned a party. I talked about a room with 10 people,

If it were a room of 10 people, all in front of a computer terminal like we have here...and one person said something about their religion being superior to other religions in that it gives them a key to heaven. I would still say something in questioning his proof, and the billions of other people excluded. Whats wrong with that. We are 10 people n a room. You distorted it to a party.

I just love eople who debate something that isnt even being posed.

If it were a "party", I would just shake my head and sip my drink and continue talking to whomever I was talking to. bUT WHO THE FUCK IS TALKING ABOUT PARTIES ALL OF A SUDDEN.
I'm really curious about this. I live in a very religiously conservative state (Tennessee) and basically exist in the Bible Belt. Car dealerships are open "9 to 6, and after church on Sunday," as the television ads say. It makes me cringe. As far as public conversation goes, you know -- between real people in real life and with no anonymity -- I'm really the most sarcastic, anti-Bible person I know when it comes to engaging hard core Christians. It's easy to run your mouth at a TAM conference or a Skeptics meeting. But you don't really score any points by making people think in those safe environs.

So here's my question, V, do you walk the walk in real life? Do you engage Christian friends and strangers regularly? Do you make real life sarcastic remarks to people who might whack you betwixt the teeth?

I'm asking because I do make cracks on a fairly regular basis. And I'm not an "atheist." I don't claim to be that smart. I'm just stridently non religious. Still, I would not go on some real life spiel between two people discussing their shared religion.

Now I'm not anonymous on this site, or any site, really. So maybe that gives me some manners, so to speak. But what I find really weird is when people take on one personality and set of behaviors online, and get off on that, but don't walk the walk in reality with real people. So I'm kind of curious as to just how often you take people on regarding religion in a non anonymous real world

    You bet I do.

Here's an example of how the shit on these boards can intrude in real life, and how I feel about it: at a WoVCon hot blonde accosted me about some unflattering shit I posted about her; she had some guy tagging along with her, trying to look tough; she said I should apologize.

I literally laughed in her face, I told her i meant what I said: I stood my ground.

    That's what I do.

I have no "christian friends:" my two best friends are both lapsed catholics (one of them hiked the Camino twice recently though, on a spiritual jaunt).

My wife is also an atheist.

On the rare occasions that someone else is stupid enough to bring up religion in conversation I let them know I don't believe, and if that doesn't shut them up then I view that as a license to debate and I start telling them how I look at things.

There is no god, no son of god, no holy ghost, no virgin birth.

The notion that there is an afterlife, a heaven and hell, is delusional.

Jesus probably lived, as did Mohammad, but they were mortal men who were admirable but not divine.

A keen student of history I am mindful of the never ending bloodshed and turmoil which religion has fomented.

Were we all atheists things would be a helluva lot calmer, and humanity would be more likely to suffer less.

As far as someone trying to whack me betwixt the teeth: I haven't been in a fist fight for many years, but I doubt I've forgotten how; some things you never forget.

Now I lift weights and work out daily, I can probably take care of myself well enough, but I've no real desire to put it to the test as I've a lot to lose.

I've no illusions, but I'm pretty sure I'd give at least as much as I'd get in an exchange.

These days I fight with words: it's a bit safer.

The pepper moths in England has been completely debunked as a hoax. The famous photos were pictures of moths glued to the trees in a selected fashion. Unfortunately it still gets mentioned in textbooks and taught at the college level. People will defend their Godless world view at any cost. Biology and evolution don't go together. Evolutionary biology is a misnomer, a non sequitur if you will.
Take off that stupid mask you big baby.

    Really?

It seems to me that the 7 year study of Michael Majerus published posthumously recently solidified the concept of evolutionary adaptation.

It's funny...redietz quotes me and questions mr v for something I said. Maybe he pretended that he and Mr v were at a party.
What fucking world does redietz live in where if someone challenges something that is purposely announced in public..it means fists will fly. What a fuck'd up world he lives in. Maybe he lives in the wild west. When someone posts here...they invite comment. And if someone purposefully makes a comment in a room of people loud enough for all to hear...they too are inviting comment. They aren't whispering...they are making sure others can hear....just as people who post on a thread rather than pm are making sure others can read

You little bitch. You can't even beat the flies off your ass. Every time you walk into a bar announce to everyone that God does not exist. See how far you get with that, bitch. You'll get your ass handed to you.

How about we drop you off in Afghanistan with "God Doesn't Exist" tatoo'ed on your forehead. See how that works out for ya.

And here I thought marijuana was not that harmful of a drug. Go to rehab,

Actually, some sites don't allow PMing until certain criteria are met. So if people get in the habit of being on sites without PMing, immediate regular post responses aren't necessarily meant to be read and commented on by everyone. Sometimes they are just a comment to the previous poster.

If LarryS posts that he likes Adidas, and I post immediately thereafter that I like a particular brand of Adidas, that is not an invitation for mickeycrimm to say that Adidas sucks and Nike is much better and we're idiots. If a poster intervenes with the comments that we're wrong and idiots, I have to wonder about that poster's reasons. Does he feel obligated to report his version of the truth? Does he feel as if he should educate everyone? Is he so paranoid that he's read the pro-Adidas posts as somehow directed at his love of Nike?
