Acid reflux occurs when a person has a weakened lower esophagus sphincter and acid meant to be contained in the stomach moves into the esophagus, which really isn't made to handle that acid and the enzymes like pepsin. LPR occurs when both lower and upper sphincters are weakened and acid (and pepsin) comes all the way to the throat which really can't handle the acid and it eats away the throat lining.
As said there is no real way to fix or strengthen these sphincters that weaken, although some doctors suggest breathing exercises.
You are correct that left untreated this condition can lead to throat and esophagus cancer. It takes several to many years and before a person gets throat or esophagus cancer. Before developing cancer, they will get something called barrett's syndrome. That is a pre cancer throat condition, but only 1-2% that get barrett's syndrome will develop full cancer. BUT this is why finding a management program that works for you is essential.
