So, I feel pretty good now. My wife and I were invited to a Diamond Appreciation luncheon and I received $10 and turned it into$20 thanks to 4 9's. I received $20 the next A.M. and started not to go but had an hour to kill so I turned it into $30 thanks to 4 7's. So, we went to another nice dinner-on me! BP rocks on free-play.Quote:

This time, I decided to play Royal Aces Bonus. $500 went in. I had a pretty decent run on the game thanks to quad 8s and a couple of straights and two full houses. I was also dealt four to the royal twice, and trip aces three times... but alas that $500 was soon gone.
So back to the cage for another $500... and again no fee. I put one $100 bill in, and on the second play caught the quad aces. (See the photo below showing $90 of the $100 that was deposited for my second try.) $4,000 win less $510 of my own money. But I had played this machine earlier in the week and lost $1500. I'm still ahead. But over two sessions the $4,000 had a "cost" of about $2,000.

That's correct, I view it as a bad "optimal" hold (aka, special play) and have probably saved thousands in my lifetime by not doing so. Never had the drawn cards made me sorry. I would have never hit a royal had I held the suited 10. I know people have hit them this way and my unwitting sister did just that, but I've probably made twice that amount of money by not doing it. But I was very glad for her, and all she could do was worry about the tax implications of the W2G. After a two minute explanation, her mind was at ease.

During the lunch break I went downstairs (the tourney was in a ballroom) and played some video poker. I played the bank of machines with a $1 double double bonus progressive. Yes, anything can happen but you can't play for "anything to happen." You have to make the right choice and hope that your right choice will pay off. That's all you can do.
It's simple if you play with my approach--which is a winning approach--and it will probably be way too tough for you to understand. I've forgotten the stats on this, but getting three cards to fill out a royal is not an everyday occurrence. But getting a high pair, two pair, trips, quads and full houses is. None of my strategies depends on or ever even needs royals to deliver winning sessions. I entirely ignored them when I developed each strategy. Whether they ever come or not is irrelevant. Win goals are all that are important, and they deny greed. If and when royals come are gravy, nothing more. Holding a suited 10 is usually asking for a losing and disappointing hand. Gulfstream has what they call the Rainbow Pick 6. In an ordinary pick 6, any one or more people that hit all 6 share the pool. In the Rainbow, you have to have the only ticket to get the jackpot (which is now up to 5 million). If there are more than 1 winner, then 60% of the amount that went into the pool that day is paid out to those winners as a consolation. The other 40% goes into the pool and carries over. At what point does it become profitable to "box" the races and hope you are the only winning ticket?
Awesome hits regnis! Not that it is of great importance but the split is 70/30 to the daily pool/carryover. Do you think on the days with bigger handles like Saturday and Sunday playing a ticket with mostly favorites, especially if they are big favorites, could be positive since so many people are probably taking flyers with tons of long shots that it might be undervaluing the favorites? The hard part is you are only playing for 56% of the actual money bet since they rake 20%.
My point remains: you shouldn't look back and over-analyze your decision with a bunch of "what ifs". Stick to your established method of play and don't do these silly mind games with yourself. They're counter productive and for a lot of players, ensuing bad habits (falling prey to the "what ifs") become their new method of play. The next time that A-10 comes up, try not to let your "what if" weakness take over before you draw. Unfortunately, it looks as if the seed has been planted.Quote:

I have one other question if you happen to live in Nevada. Is there a place online where you can bet horses? I would find it much more convenient than going up to the the casino to bet. I have looked around but it seems they all restrict Nevada residents. I understand too if you don't want to say.

Thanks Regnis. I think most of that pertains to sports betting. I think they consider horse betting a little different. I did see an advertisement for a phone account at one of the stations where you could bet horses. I am usually in casinos late at night after the sports books close but I will get in and eventually be able to ask some questions.
Hit a royal on Friday, and it was my first royal since the one at the Las Vegas Airport back in February. This one came on my $120 of free play... on the second play.

Actually, Rob, I went on to hit quad aces on Royal Aces Bonus for $4,000. I hit that on an additional $405 of free play that became available later in the day.
I also bought in for $100 at card craps, got as high as $185 and left the table with $168. That covered my gas and a fast food stop.
I haven't had a losing trip to Rincon in my last six visits. Though I must admit my smallest "win" was about $400 which came from free play. I personally haven't used any of my own money there in the last six visits.

Rob... I hit big on the casino's free play. Any time I win $8k on free play I will gladly risk $2500 of it trying to win more.
The first free play load of $120 was already available. The second became available after 8am. I arrived at 7:30am.
The problem with that type of approach is you lose track of what you successfully just did (which was to hit the two best hands possible--what the Heck more were you expecting?) all for the sake of greed. And where does greed usually get us??

Hi all, I'm a new member and thought i'd show my best wins so far.
I've only been playing VP for perhaps 8 months or so and so far I think i've been very lucky.
I accidentally played a $100 hand at Mirage and scored this straight flush on the first hand (and only hand at that denomination!):
I also played on a different trip $100 in a $1 DDB machine and on the very first hit got the royal (sorry for the bad pic, this is at Mirage again at the bar where the atrium beams light onto the machines):
and then I went to Winstar in OK and hit this within the first 10 hands:
Wish I'd been playing dollars.
That's it for now, have a Vegas trip planned in October so i'll post after that if I have any to show!

Hi rymetymeuk welcome and thanks for posting. Tell us more about that multi denomination machine? I am guessing that you can choose the amount of money you wish to play on each hand? And when you got the hand pay, did they ask you to "play it off" and if so what happened? Did you play another hand at 100 coins?

the way it happened is that I went to a 0.25 machine and worked my way up to $135 from $100, and then saw the 1-100 VP game. Me being a noob thought it was going to let me play 1 to 100 hands, so a multi play and in my confusion I kept pressing the "play 5" button. it incremented up to the $100 and then dealt, and I was quite shocked to see i'd just dropped $100! haha well it worked out well in the end.
To the best of my memory I just cashed it out, but I honestly can't remember. I was in a slight state of shock at the time!
TI & Mirage are famous for those 100-credit dollar machines. TI has them at their main huge bar, and I've seen many customers lose it all, accidentally, on their first hand.
Caesars once had a 100-line $1 machine that I would play one-credit per line. Once by accident I hit max-bet for $500 but luckily was dealt a pair of kings. Made a small profit. Never again.
I used to play the 50-line $1 game at Caesars years ago ($250 per push of the button) but I gave that up pretty quickly. But the weekend about 10 years ago when I hit two progressive $5 royals at Caesars I also played that 50-line machine DDB and was dealt three aces with a kicker. I made the mistake of holding the kicker. I did get quad aces on two lines, and got a pay in excess of $4000 but I probably cost myself a lot of money holding that kicker instead of just the three aces.
I don't doubt it at all Rob! The woman who hand paid me said some guy lost thousands on it, and was surprised I had held the 4 to a straight flush. That surprised me as it was clearly the correct play, perhaps she wasn't a VP player.
Do you guys practice on VP for Winners software? if so, do you play perfectly? I'm asking because I see you guys winning some huge jackpots, and wondered if you honed your skills over many years using software like that or not.
I used software some years ago -- and yes it helps. But I learned primarily from John Grochowski's book on video poker strategy.
I like to throw a hundy into a 100 play machine at .10 so $50- bet. Hit the buttons twice and cash out. It's fun.
ok thanks Alan, I'll order that book. The software has helped me a lot but i'm still not as accurate as I feel I should be to play $5 or higher machines. I've had terrible luck at DDB too, is there a rule of thumb for required bankroll?

11X means 11 * the denomination you play. If it's dollars and you are playing a 100% return game, the requirement "not to go broke " is $11,000 in the "long term". It means absolutely nothing because it's calculated using math and play into infinity. Many players have gone broke using this nonsense.
