This was nice of him, but unnecessary. $1.1 million isn't like a billion. It's gone before you know it.

Tipping for huge jackpots is awkward because many staff feel entitled, and will talk shit about you if you tip a few hundred bucks, as if they deserved more for handing you paperwork and a check. I'd rather tip zero than give a tip which is scoffed at. I'm not sure what I'd tip on a $1.1m jackpot, or if I'd tip at all (because of the concern that they would look down upon any reasonable tip I'd give).

The jackpot hit at the Tropicana AC.

1.1 mil is a very nice hit, not massive like it would have been 20-25 years ago, but sizeable nonetheless. You are put in a awkward position regardless of what you do. You tip 200$-300$(which I would do being honest about it) you get scolded(not worth it). You give 50k(absurd) your a chump. I couldn't fathom even giving 1k for such a scenario. It comes down simply that it's not justified to do so. It's a combination of analyzing what this situation justifies and the valuation of money. When it's all said and done I give 0, less hassle and headache. I believe there are many people in this camp, they are just to afraid to admit it.

I would tip 0.

$0.00 tip. But then again, I wouldn't be betting on it in the first place.

I think you guys are missing the AP angle to this. However he leans, he's likely to get laid by a number of dealers in the days ahead. Having seen the street workers in AC, I think it's a good move.

not sure why anyone should care how they're perceived by tipping. the only views that matter are the suits that let you play. yes, i realize ac can't really 86 you but there are other countermeasures.

The entitledness of casino workers.

99% of people lose, then when you finally get lucky and hit an extreme long shot where you are probably getting paid much less than you should actually be based on the odds of the long shot coming in, they expect a big tip, as if its their money, not yours, and as if they did you some kind of favor by dealing you a winning hand in a negative expectation game.

If an "appropriate tip" on a $20,000 video poker royal is $100, then an appropriate tip on a $1.1-million handpay is $5,500.

I'd probably just give $5,000.

Not necessarily. This doesn't scale upwards. It's not a restaurant. They don't have some kind of entitlement to a percentage of your win.

Think of grocery delivery services like Instacart. If I order a bunch of bulky but cheap stuff from Costco, I'm giving a high percentage tip, because it's a lot of effort for them, and the amount of money for my order isn't very high. However, if I order a few really expensive items which add up to $1000, I'm not giving them a $100 tip, even though it's only 10%. Why? Because the cost of the items shouldn't figure into this. They're simply getting items for me and bringing them, and I'm tipping them for their trouble.

Actually, what amount to tip on a 7 figure (or even 6 figure) jackpot is a problem I would really like to have...........

Then, on November 16 he returned and placed a $1,000,000 bet with a suitcase filled with $550,000 in cash, $140,000 in gold Krugerrands, and $310,000 in cashier's checks. Again, Bergstrom bet the Don't Pass, however the shooter threw a winner seven on the come out roll resulting in a $1,000,000 loss for Bergstrom.

According to Ted Binion, Bergstrom had borrowed most of the money for the first bet and intended to commit suicide if he lost. Instead, he won and traveled the world for several years before returning in 1984.

Bergstrom never recovered from his million dollar loss and committed suicide on February 4, 1985, by swallowing pills. The reason for his suicide remains unknown. Friends and family believed that he was not broke at the time of his death and still had $647,000.

His note suggested his suicide was triggered by a breakup with a man 10 years his junior.

The guy doesn't get paid in cash on the spot does he? All I saw was a picture of one of those giant checks. I doubt he's got 50 g's in his wallet so how's he supposed to give those chumps anything.

On big jackpots they don’t have to be all cash or all check. They can split it however you want. Probably just had them pop $50k out for the Tip. If the big check is is showing the full amount without the $50k deduct, thats probably just for the publicity photo. They likely gave him a regular sized check minus the $50k tip, but he would get a tax form for the full win including the tip.

My guess, I could be wrong.

I'd love to take one of those big checks into the bank to cash. It would never fit in the ATM!

Reminds me of someone on this Website who said something like, "A Guy won $20,000 on a $5 bet. He was so ecstatic, he begun giving a lot of random Gambling Strangers $300 a pop, even me. I knew he was going to end up broke and begging for his money back sooner than later. I was right. Just about an hour later, he was broke and begging the random Gambling Strangers for his money back just like I accurately predicted. They LAUGHED at him and refused to give him his money back. He was understandably devastated. He then asked me for his money back and I gave it back to him because I felt so incredibly bad for him. He obviously got caught up in the moment and impulsively gave away his money to a lot of Random Gambling Strangers he didn't even know. He was grateful to get his $300 back from me.

A flea just got a hand pay (could have been his first ever) and then used it all to buy in to a craps game.

Said he always wanted to bet big: he did.

Didn't last more than ten minutes til it was gone.

You're correct. When you win any jackpot, they will always ask you how you want it. I have won several jackpots in excess of $20k. I have asked for a small amount in Cash and the rest via check. Never had a problem.
