The problem with masking at this stage is that the viral loads have increased so much that filtering 90% of the particles is of limited value unless you are only very briefly in hailing distance of infected people. In other words, one could do the viral load approximate math for the initial two or three Covid incarnations and understand that if you wore a mask, it might take 40 minutes or more of exposure to someone for much to get through your mask. Unfortunately, the viral loads increased so much with successive variants that you wound up getting exposed in four or five minutes to what used to take an hour. So masks are currently of limited but non-zero utility in both keeping you safe and preventing others from being infected by you. If your exposure might be walking through an airport for 30 minutes and you want to wear a mask, probably of some value. If you are on a plane for two hours in close proximity to the infected, that mask probably isn't going to do you much good. Hanging in a casino or anywhere indoors for a full day, probably not going to help much. Better than nothing, one presumes, but then you have people who are wearing masks assuming more exposure time because they are wearing masks, and that mucks up any small advantage.
And I have to say this -- if you wanted an environment where you had the best shot of getting infected, something like the WSOP is pretty much ideal. Don't be surprised, in other words, that you got the clap after spending the last 200 nights in various brothels.
