I'm about halfway through Ramaswamy's book. It's worth reading to pick up a couple of cultural gems that somehow have been edited out of most news cycles. For example, I did not know that the whole Lady Gaga "Born This Way" emphases in gay political speech exist for specific reasons that have nothing to do with research or genetics or scientific proof of any kind. Basically, somehow the Constitution has been legally interpreted as providing more protection for behaviors that are not chosen but are innate. So the argument for "gayness" as genetically pre-determined is a legal argument in search of science, not a scientific argument. It's a way to wrangle more protections than if gayness were labeled as voluntary.

I never knew this, and I am relatively well-grounded in genetic and biochemical influences on behavior, having followed the subject since E.O. Wilson first started publishing. But with no legal background, I had no idea the whole "born this way" current mantra is about trying to strong-arm legal rights regardless of science or logic. I was in the dark.

Anyway, Ramaswamy is interesting. A little Darwinian in his capitalist leanings, but intelligent and readable.

I'm reading Lee Child's "A Wanted Man" currently, another Reacher tale, with Charles Sheffield's sci-fi "Resurgence" on deck.

I recently reread in its entirety for the first time an old tome from college about the history of western civilization: quite informative.

But every behavior has some biological substrate, correlate, some kind of biochemical relationship. It's a question of how strong or to what degree. No behavior is mandatory unless you put a gun to someone's head. That's the problem. "Born this way" is an argument for mandatory behaviors. Predilection is one thing; mandatory claims are another.

You have to ask yourself what the genetic advantage of being gay is for passing on one's genes if gay is not a choice. There are some semi-reasonable speculations regarding this, by the way.

I didn't duck shit, I answered the question. That was a speech-to-text error. Regardless, I suck at spelling. I don't have a problem knowing I write and spell like crap, it's not like I don't know that. I even bust on myself to my friends about it. I'm fairly certain I've even made fun of myself regarding my shitty writing ability and spelling on the forums. If you have a problem with it, that's your problem. The last time I checked good spelling wasn't a requirement for being a professional gambler and or doing anything else I do.
