Thread: The Riddler

  1. #1
I suggest everyone avail themselves of the latest post explaining The Riddler's last poem under Sports and Sports Betting. I'm sure Axelwolf and mickey will find it especially endearing.

    Who WAS that masked man?

I won't find it endearing/entertaining or likewise since I didn't read the other stuff the Riddler posted. I have no interest in wasting more time on convoluted riddle shenanigans that could probably be interpreted in multiple ways.

Do we have a date set for the PFA show? It would be nice to have a timeline set soon.

Here you go, Axelwolf, I'll assist you with the lines in question while working hard with you to figure out how they could be "interpreted in multiple ways."

"McConaughey at home, picking up older ladies
Ma Kettle was heard in his moaning."

Well, the most famous McConaughey is Matthew, who lives in Texas. Picking up "older ladies" refers to "cougars." And McConaughey's Pa played for the Houston Cougars, which is the answer to the first part of the riddle.

Now, Axelwolf, lay on me those multiple interpretations you mentioned. I'd love to hear them.

The other teams in the riddle, that failed to make money for the project, were Memphis and Wake Forest. Wake, despite being the fourth best ACC team, was squeezed out of the tournament. I believe that is the first time a fourth place ACC team was not invited.

Multiple interpretations indeed. The Riddler was even kind enough to make sure no one thought Wake Forest was Duke with the "not-blue Pazuzu" line. He didn't want anyone thinking Demon Deacons were Blue Devils, so he made sure to mention that the team in question did not wear blue.

Again, I'm not interested in all that, if you have some picks post them up before the game with obtainable lines and a brief description of why you think it's a good bet. Something like Half Smoke does. Then I can make my own decision if I think the logic and math add up to a good bet. I have seen guys make a shiton of picks with outstanding results over a season or two(hundreds of picks) and then have terrible results over the next few + seasons.

You are a truly funny dude. Everyone must be out to impress the anonymous Axelwolf.

Thanks for the great tips and instructions. Thanks also for the laughs.

The great Axelwolf -- LOL. You address this stuff like a fifth-grader. Here's a hint -- each sport is its own thing. If you have been operating under a different premise, God bless you and yours.

But comedically, you're a tough man to top.

I always assumed you and Shackleford compared notes on most things, but there is no way on God's green earth that Shackleford would write what you just did. He can't be that naive and/or stupid. No way. I halfway think you're just faking it yourself.

Well, you can claim I'm anonymous all you want, however, I have met way more people in person from the forums than you have... 100's, in fact. Not just people from the forums, I have met many of the well-known public gambling experts/gurus/APs/writers or whatever you want to call them, many of them know my birth name.

Whatever the case, when is the PFA show going to happen?

Yeah, that's a real gambling feather -- remind me to put that in my next resume.

"I have met hundreds of people from gambling forums."

You don't seem to get the reality of this. Sports gambling has existed at a level way beyond all of the slots/video poker/blackjack experts combined for decades. Mr. Flowers was way late to the sports gambling table when he plugged the LVA into the sports gestalt circa 1990. That was actually one of my bitches about LVA. It was way late. Same with Shackleford. Everyone thinks they've invented the wheel, because they've never visited the tire shop.

You seem to think I care or compete with "gambling experts/gurus/APs/writers or whatever." I do not. I bet sports, and have bet sports since well before I first started visiting LV for a hundred days a year back in '82 or whenever.

I don't care about blackjack. I don't care about slot machines. I don't care much about poker. I don't care too much about video poker. I'm a small step above civilian for all of this stuff. What I get a kick out of is various and sundry "APs" completely out of their depth thinking they can import some sixth grade math and their stellar abilities and tell sports bettors what's what. It would be like me telling mickey what slots to play because I figured out that some have overlays. Like that puts me on equal footing with him, which is beyond ridiculous.

What in God's name makes you so arrogant? I consider myself arrogant, but some of you guys are off the charts. I think part of it is the lack of being exposed to academia, where people routinely have decent training in a particular field but defer to those who have devoted all of their lives to subfields. You guys don't know how to defer.

Only a retard would defer to a retard that thinks EV is irrelevant to profitable sports betting.

I'm sure the esteemed gentleman posting this could provide a direct quote of the retard saying EV is irrelevant to profitable sports betting.

Take your time. Do try to find it sometime before July, though.

I'll remind you to keep looking each and every day until you find that quote. I love motivating people. If someone wants to use "EV" in past tense to assign a value to past events/results, I'm perfectly fine with it because you are using it as a math term and not as a substitute for "my opinion." I have stated this very thing umpteen times on this site.

I do get a hoot out of those folks, however, who use the letters "EV" in place of "my opinion" regarding future sporting events where arbitrage isn't involved. What kind of narcissistic, self-absorbed, overblown maroon would use "EV" as a substitute for "my opinion?" Usually someone who needs a crutch to justify the wager he or she is about to make.

Sporting events are not coin flips. Not at all. Not close.

Do you think the spread makes the betting line close to a coinflip?

If you’re playing with an advantage then where is your EV?

    EV?

    We ain’t got no EV.

    We don’t need no EV!

I DON’T HAVE TO SHOW YOU ANY STINKIN’ EV!!!!!!!!!!!

LOL. Close to a coin flip isn't a coin flip. And some spreads, like say two hours prior to tipoff on Saturdays late in the 2017 college basketball season as opposed to Mondays in September early in the 1992 college football season, are more coin flip-esque than others. So why try to impose some false precision on what you can do by importing a term like "EV" for future events....when all it is, in reality, is your opinion of what you think the EV might be? Your best guess. The "Expected" in "EV" should be about an estimate based on the math of random events, not your personal opinion of what might happen going forward in a non-random event. Why import a math term to dress up what in reality is just your opinion? You can say, "I think the 'EV' is" or "My opinion of what the 'EV' will be." Just don't say "the 'EV' is" without attaching the clear statement that it's just your subjective opinion.

EV should be a math term, not a term you slap on your opinion to make it sound like it's more than your opinion. Now I understand why gambling addicts prefer to say "the EV" instead of "my opinion." So I can understand why a common use of the term would migrate in that direction. There are other gambling terms that have been corroded because people prefer to believe they have more precision and control and ability to predict the future than they actually have. Unsurprisingly, casinos have been more than happy to popularize and even introduce this kind of language migration. If you can't think of others, there's an especially obvious one in machine play. I'll save it for another day.

I'd also enlighten you with my seesaw analogy, but I'll also save that for a wider audience.

    Have a good day, Axelwolf.

The Riddler has left the building.

Retard, after the event has passed then the expected value is really truly thoroughly wrong.

Think hard about the definition of the word expected.

    And just stop it.

Forensic analysis shows a 99.54% chance that Bob Dietz is a fraud.

Betting spreads combined with the juice are based in probability theory.

The house is essentially using probability theory to make a profit.

The house is only half the equation.

The bettor is the other half.

To write the full equation one can't use a bettor's opinion. You have to use the math.

The sporting event itself may not be a coin flip but the line makes betting against the spread very close to a coin flip. You could call it "a coin flip with juice."

Once again, Billy Walters did not bet based on opinion. He didn't bet hunches. He bet based on statistical analysis. Statistical analysis is huge in Probability Theory.
