It seems very reasonable that the lines back then were soft enough that his handicapping and hunch betting were enough to make him profitable.

With today's lines and no understanding of EV in regards to bets you'd have to be at best ignorant if you were to use his services.

Well, one thing is I'm NOT faking being Asian, not that there's anything wrong with that (as Seinfeld and my friend who named himself Blakock would agree).

Now, if you were an honest purveyor of gambling history and wisdom, you would quote the final five years of college ATS records from the McCusker Reports, and (as Paul Harvey famously said), "tell the rest of the story."

But I digress. Let me first correct you vis-a-vis The Wise Guys, which at its peak had about 80 invitation-only participants. The "obscure Wise Guys Contest" -- your words, not mine, and no excuses for English as a second language -- was so obscure it was on thousands of newsstands nationally for decades. In fact, it was featured on the back page of a newsletter with tens of thousands of subscribers AND was on newsstands nationally for decades. That, and the final five years of "Tipsters or Gypsters?" is why Billy Walters hired me. Tough to knock all those years of winning.

So let's recap a moment. Why would someone comment about a contest and get wrong:

(A) the number of participants by a huge margin and
(B) the notoriety of the contest, which was in a nationally distributed publication (and likely also featured on the television show) for 30 friggin' years?

Now don't get me wrong. I'm all for being an arrogant know-it-all (as Curly from the Three Stooges often says, "I resemble that remark"), but you got two obvious things dead, completely wrong. Why would you pass judgement and publicly comment on something you know nothing about?

The facts about my college experience is that I was able to attend Villanova using 3 different scholarships afforded me, the largest. because my father was killed while working for the government. My Grandfather a Villanova Alum, pulled some strings for me to be accepted. I couldn't have gotten in there on my own, even with the scholarships.

I didn't want this to be known earlier in my online posting, because I didn't know if someone, (specifically thinking casino related someone) could use this information to identify me. So I said, I didn't have the opportunity to go to college instead.

A further truth is that I wasted that opportunity and regret it to this day. After a couple years I just was more interested in partying (actually from the start), but just wanted to get out work and be on my own, which I did. And while I later finished my education online, just as Mdog did, to this day, I regret that I did not graduate from Villanova.

A further truth is that advantage players that play for a living for decades, really don't need a formal education. They need some math skills and knowledge of which I wish I had more. Mostly basic stuff that is learned in High School not college. Many/Most AP's get their education on the streets. Many/ Most make their own way. I include myself in that group.

But some asshole, who got his education online, from a place that wealthy people just buy a diploma, and spend Daddy's money in casinos, losing while telling everyone he is winning wouldn't understand anything about what it is to be an advantage player. A few words about Alan.

Overall I found him to be a decent guy, which is why I felt he was deserving of the tribute on the top of the forum. Well, that and the fact that he founded this place, and tolerated all of the bullshit here for so many years before handing it to me.

Say what you want about Alan, but he basically made this a free speech forum where people could come if they got booted from other gambling forums. That's not what he intended it to be, but that's what it became, and he never wavered from it.

Alan's personal life was flawed, to say the least. He had a gambling problem. He had multiple divorces, likely due at least in part to said gambling problem. He seemed to have somewhat of an irritation with the concept of advantage play, since he personally lost a good deal of money gambling, and probably didn't want to believe AP was a real thing.

I had my share of issues/arguments with Alan, especially after I took over here. I won't rehash those. It's minor bullshit when you get down to it.

I was truly sad when I heard about his passing. I knew he had major kidney issues, and I didn't expect him to live until 90. However, I thought he'd be around for a lot longer than he was.

I respected his journalism career, some of which took place when he was very young. Some people criticized his "Best Buys" TV show, which indeed was an infomercial, but I saw no problem with it. You'd have to be a complete moron not to realize he was getting paid by the businesses he featured. To me the program was more of a showcase of various businesses who wanted the public to know about them. Alan claimed he was let go from his last salaried TV position because of his age, and that's probably true. Show business is rarely easy on older people. He had to do something, and he used his notoriety in LA to start the Best Buys show. When I first saw him, I had remembered him from television from many years prior.

Anyway, bottom line is that we wouldn't have this forum if not for Alan starting it in 2010. This place serves a purpose. Among other things, you always have a voice here when the "less tolerant" gambling forums ban you for flimsy (or even not-so-flimsy) reasons. You can show up here and post absurd shit, and I generally tolerate it. You can partially thank Alan for that. While I also lean toward the free speech model, it was easy to do here, as I wanted to continue running the forum with a similar feel and tone to the Alan Bestbuys Forum as which it started.

Look I know no wager will happen, but it shows MDawg knows what he said was just more trolling of KJ. Druff (and someone privately to me) made it clear you aren’t the same person.
