There was a time, when the Automobile first came out, when some of you were born, and people were like "How am I supposed to re-fuel it, there is no gas station on the way, I can just stop and give some water to my horse from the creek over yonder."

I see people with gas cars talking negatively about EV's like that... You are comparing a horse and buggy to an automobile...

    I've owned multiple EV's...

    2015 Nissan Leaf
    2020 Tesla Model Y
    2021 Polestar II
    2021 Tesla Model Y Performance
    2022 Tesla Model X Plaid

I will tell you this, if you are considering an EV, if you can't use the Tesla Supercharging Network I wouldn't suggest getting that unless you know for sure you will never roadtrip it. For daily use, you will wake up with a "full tank" every day so no need to supercharge / use public chargers for daily use.

Mildly curious. Why do you change cars so often?

Another issue is the failure of EV drivers to contribute to the cost of maintaining highways / infrastructure, unlike we who pay hefty taxes on gasoline.

Also Alan's kid lives I believe in so Cal. with its plethora of green accomodations...try getting electricity in the middle of night in the midst of a blizzard in bumfuck Wyoming...

We have choices...let's not try to shame /demean / talk down at one another for the choices we've made, eh?

The 2015 I got used in 2019. Got it for $5K and sold it during covid for like 8 or 9K.

I've had a lot of cars. Between me and my wife we used to be a 3 car family. Now its just two with the Tesla and the Bronco.

The Tesla Y's... Here is my long story short Tesla story....

We decided to get a Model Y early during Covid. We were able to get a demo unit with like 1,000 miles on it for a discount. This was like February or March 2020. Financed with very minimal down.

As soon as we got it we new we wanted the Model X (larger). So we ordered a Model X Long Range ($111K ($200 down)). Delivery was supposed to be August 2020. Fast forward to July and we get a message "Prepare for Delivery." So we sold the Model Y. At this time, you couldn't get a tesla without a very long wait so we sold it for roughly 10K more than we paid.

Literally the next day after Selling the Model Y, our "Prepare for Delivery" status turned to ETA a year from now.... So I was like fuck... We need another car... The regular Model Y had a 5-6 month wait, but the Model Y Performance was readily available (more money). So ordered a Model Y performance and took delivery within a few days (Paid cash).

Fast forward a year, we want our X! They were finally starting to deliver them but they were all Plaids (the Plaid is more expensive and at this time the Plaid was $155K). We still had no ETA for our Long Range, so I decided to try ordering a Plaid. Paid the $250 deposit and poof, not but 3 days later come get your Model X!

So we sell the Model Y performance for again $10K more than we paid, and put down $50K on the $155K plaid. At this time the Long Range (which we still had on order) was selling for $145 and figured we would keep that order and buy it to flip it...

We get our Plaid and we love it.

Fast forward 6 months, our Long Range is finally ready to pickup. At this point the market is already starting to correct and they are not reselling for much so we decided to not pickup the Long Range.

Now, the $155K plaid we purchased is something stupid like $80K New from Tesla. We hate the fact that they discounted the car so much. It is horrible what they did. I absolutely hate how Tesla operates with their pricing, but at least now, since the car market is terrible the Tesla's are more reasonably priced and they are offering incentives...

So I have a big love hate relationship with Tesla...

I mean, my vehicle registration for the Tesla is much greater than a gas vehicle of a similar cost.

Unless you are driving more than 250 miles a day, you don't need to find a charger away from your home...

I am familiar with gas engines and all associated components but know little about the electric motors powering EV's, so "familiarity" is a big factor.

The fact that EV's are quick to accelerate means nothing to me as my daily driver is a 1982 Volvo 244 Turbo: not slow but certainly not fast.

I have a problem with the limited range of EV's and the dearth of charging stations; I also have a problem with the idea that the battery will wear out and need replacement.

Then again, I'm a bit of a Luddite: while I don't fear change per se I do not embrace it, preferring to rely on the Old Familiar: I don't have a smart phone or a tablet (PC only, running WIndows 7!) and as an audiophile I don't stream music, I listen to LP's and CD's plus KBOO-FM in stumptown.

Set in my ways and liking it....
You can't fix a ton of modern car stuff but I agree with EVs it is basically components that you swap out. The upside though is the cars don't have near as much expensive maintenance or failures.

Depending on where and how you drive, the charging thing isn't a big deal. I honestly believe some people don't have it together enough to make those decisions properly because it is a real concern. For instance, I came home today at 5% which was really low but I only needed to drive dad fo doctor and back etc. I could have easily stopped at a super charger that was not out of the way at all and hung out for 10 minutes. Instead, I didn't have to stop anywhere, parked in the garage, and plugged it in. So instead of a few minutes messing around at a gas station - I just parked it inside and plugged 'er in.

The battery wearing out is really a thing but I'm not sure how much worse it is than ICE engines being worn out. My battery has degraded a little too fast for what I want .. I got a bit unlucky there. It remains to see if that schedule will continue or slow down.

lol LPs and CDs.. cassettes are back in fashion too.

If the charger is installed in the garage - why not? It takes 20 seconds to plug-in and you have max range starting out every day.

Or maybe your EV has fairly low range compared to your daily needs.

You're worried about EV users not contributing their fair share? Well what about not contributing as much to the particle pollutants floating about poisoning peopel? (yea yea pile on but it is a real thing)

You can always use a generator to charge the car if that is your concern. (in the wyoming blizzard)

Yea, used Tesla model Y's that aren't long range are a really good value IMO. I try to get my gf to get one. Her firm's office is on the other side of town so she is always leaving early/arriving late to avoid traffic. I'm like, go spend 20-25k and get a Tesla like I do and hten when you're stuck on the interstate, just put it in auto-drive and sit back and check emails or whatever. (Or troll Singer)

BUt I agree about the depreciation and such. I am/was a bit bitter about this. I was upside down for years on the car.

I'll tell you guys when I have to put more money into it outside of tires and windshield fluid.

ALso - I'm blown away the Tesla board is trying so hard to keep Elon on. He's toxified himself enough the libs will not get over that much unlike what people want to believe. So perhaps the alt-right types will make up for it?

Most of the electricity used to power EV's is sourced from coal, gas or oil, correct?

New gas powered cars run much, much cleaner than they used to: air pollution isn't that big of a thing any more with new cars in America.

I enjoy working on and maintaining my old Volvo Turbo cars: parts are readily available and not particularly expensive, and there is great satisfaction and savings in DIY.

There are not coal/gas plants around where people live more or less. I'd have to read the breakdown of powre production but ultimately my car is not making the smog in a city to near the extent.

I'd rather just not have to DIY to begin with. I have some gas cars and always something if you're not driving them every few weeks. At least thats how it seems .. but the Tesla wastes power being PARKED as the computers run in the background etc. Although I guess maybe not much difference than key-fobs.

Back to the WIZ. It has been quite successful. Management is starting to think that movies may be more profitable than concerts over time.

Doh I was wondering why you asked such an obvious answerable question..
