Thread: Wizard of Oz at the Sphere

  1. #41
I really don't want this thread to turn into more trolling of MDawg and Rob Singer.

While I have been clear that I don't believe a lot of what MDawg has claimed over the years, I do believe he's a high stakes gambler, and I do believe his story about going to Wizard of Oz and getting a suite.

Anyway, getting back to the topic at hand...

From what I'm reading, everyone seems the like the 300-level center. Section 306 is dead center, with 305 and 307 next to them. The same is true for the 200 and 400 level. As already mentioned, Jason sat in 207, but on the very side of it right next to 206, so he got almost-206 seating for less than half the price. He seemed very pleased with his seats.

Indeed, from my research, the 206-adjacent 207 seats are good, and everyone liked them. I'm just seeing slightly better reviews for the 306/307 area, as everyone is stating that you don't have to look up or down, and therefore it's a more relaxing viewing experience. The 200 level has the advantage of being closer to the flying monkeys, as well as having a much better shot at getting apples (which apparently DO still drop!)

I also noticed that TicketDisaster has an absolutely retarded policy of not letting you buy an odd number of tickets in certain aisle-adjacent seats, as they claim these are "preferred seats", and therefore they don't want singleton seats going unsold. So if you have 3 people and want to sit on the aisle, you're fucked in most cases. Dumb huh?

I'm finding that there are absolutely zero kinds of discounts for Wizard of Oz. No locals discounts, no AAA discounts, no players card discounts (though Venetian will give you free tickets in offers if you play high enough), and no discount code of any kind works.

The third party sellers are MORE expensive than face value, so I don't know why anyone would buy from them, unless they're just stupid. spotlight dot vegas is slightly cheaper (like 4%) if you use one of their coupon codes, but that's probably not even worth it to have to hassle with dealing with them instead of just having tickets direct from the venue.

Tickets are more expensive for certain shows (demand?), and most oddly, certain side sections are only available for certain showings. For example, 8pm shows on weeknights have only sections 205-207, 305-307, and 405-407, but I see other shows with 208, 204, and even 209/203 open. Funny that they don't even make these side sections available for the less popular times -- as if they want to always create artificial demand that it's close to full.

Well, now I know everything I possibly can about Wizard of Oz without having seen it. Still not sure if I'm going. Doesn't sit well with me to have to lay out $170+ per seat for decent tickets to a 45-minute movie from 1939. But I might anyway.

I just don't see what the attraction is on seeing WoO in the Sphere?

And I of all people should foam at the mouth over the prospect, given the fact I acted a key role in our junior high school production of WoO.

The movie resonates with me, but seeing it at the Sphere?

    No go.

When IMAX first came out I recall people were more excited over the technology than the film shown: could be the same thing here.

    To each his own.

Going to anything publicly is a nightmare now.
Everyone and their mothers is holding up a phone or looking at their phone.
Even DanDruff was bitching about having to put his phone in a bag, at a concert.
Nothing but bots out on the webs and in real life these days.
Best to stay at home and watch it on your own setup with your own recliners and whatnot.
Stupid Sphere, really, that Fucking thing is Dumb As Fuck.
And you got to be a real stupid son of a bitch to take the time to go to the sphere and pay a premium price, to watch anything.
Not to mention fighting all the dumb tourists who can't walk or drive or chew bubble gum.

Agree. The smart move is to stay away from "gatherings" for a multitude of reasons. You like getting sick with someone else's germs? Be my guest. Especially from foreign idiots on the strip.

Sounds like a bunch of old men talking here, and I'm no youngster myself.

Maybe The Wizard of Oz at the Sphere doesn't appeal to you, and that's fine. I find it interesting to have a classic movie on a huge screen surrounding me, combined with effects which make you feel like you're part of the action. Most people who have been there have really enjoyed it.

At my age especially (53), it's foolish to worry about catching viruses when out in public. Let's say I get a cold or flu. So what? Sucks for a short period of time, then it gets better and I'm fine. I'm not going to hide from life in order to avoid that.

My parents are over 80. They put more care into avoiding situations where they can get viruses than I do, because they're at an age where the flu can be deadly. But they still go out all the time and do things. It's dumb to resign yourself to staying away from public venues.

The most worrisome thing about "gatherings," is the possibility of a mass shooting however, not germs. I remember a guy saying he saw a fun parade for Martin Luther King day happening near where he lives and thought,"This looks fun," and he was just about to join the crowd that was watching but thought,"This actually looks like a prime spot for a mass shooting to happen," and went home instead. I don't blame him. Mass shootings often happen at fun places like parades.

    Whatever.

Fact is, I really like the movie and have it on Blu Ray: I can screen it whenever I want at home.

Seems quite immersive to me already in my in-home theater: the OLED screen, separate amps, 5 speakers and a subwoofer really send it.

Why the fuck would I be tempted to fly to LV and deal with all the bullshit there these days just to see it?

And paying over a hundred bucks for the privilege?

I'll pass...and age has nothing to do with it.

    Think "cost / benefit analysis."

Speaking of old people on a Website, I made a thread on one Website that was filled with 20 something year olds who got huge laughs out of it. I posted the same thread on a different Website expecting laughs and the Posters were disgusted instead and said they would be reporting my thread to the Admin. Turns out that the second Website was filled with mostly middle aged and elderly Posters who didn't find my thread funny at all whereas the Website filled with 20 something year olds found it funny. I found out after posting the thread on the second Website that it was filled with mostly middle aged and elderly Posters.

I'm getting the impression you don't know what the Sphere is if you find it incomprehensible that someone would want to see a movie there when they could see it at home on a TV.

Seeing a movie at the Sphere is a scam that only 12 to 32 year olds fall for.
You're much better off watching a movie at home where you can eat, talk, pause, go to the bathroom, etc etc.
Some of us have huge TV's and Sound Systems that are more than sufficient.
The Sphere is Dumb, plain and simple.

Now that IMAX thing at the Luxor was pretty cool 15 years ago because it had things you couldn't do at home.
I enjoyed it and watched a few of them multiple times for free.
But going to the Sphere, hanging out with the plebes and wearing a mask.
    No Thank You.

Oh Wait, they had U2 though!
Yeah, the biggest sell out in the history of rock and roll.

I know exactly what it is and have a good idea what the experience would be like.

I've paid particular attention to the posts of one fellow who went there umpteen times to channel the vibe of the Grateful Dead via Dead & Company and Phish.

    Interesting.

It’s almost as if 20 somethings have different tastes & senses of humor than middle age or elderly people.

It almost makes me wonder if other categories of groups have different tastes & senses of humor too.

For example I wonder if a raunchy comedy that plays well in the United States would be just as popular in places like the Middle East, North Korea, Tibet, & Pakistan,

It’s sort of a head scratcher if you ask me,

No need to defend yourself here.

Plus middle age and elderly people often (though definitely not always) tend to be sticks in the mud.

Raunchy comedy like Married With Children:

N.Korea: not allowed...but watched at will by military leaders only.
    Pakistan: arrested & jailed.
    Tibet: OK.
Middle East: depends. No problem in Israel; widely watched in the UAE, with caution warnings; strictly forbidden in Iran; allowed but not recommended in most other Arab countries.
