It could also be that alan was using the business to help enrichen his son, i.e. the "next generation," sort of an advance on his inheritance.
I do that with my son: I help him out financially because I can easily afford to and, more importantly, I both want to have a chance to watch him and his family enjoy it as well as know he is not just waitng for me to die so he finally gets a pay day.
