I feel the same way about Lost. Seasons 1 & 2 were great. 3 was ok but it started to go downhill. Actually never even finished the series at all, lost all interest by the last season,

Early on in my legal practice I represented a guy, let's call him "Drew."
Normal case, but I learned sometime after it was over tthat he'd suicided, not sure why.
A few years later a young man came in, said he was "Drew, jr." and did I remember his dad?
I did, and he told me "People tell me I'm gonna kill myself like my dad did, but I'll prove them wrong."
I learned a few years later that he killed himself also.
Then there's the father of two son's my son used to hang with: dad killed himself and left nothing to his boys: gave it all to a grand daughter: shitty thing to do, I fear for their future.
My point: depression runs in the family: if your sire suicides get help to cope and avoid doing the same.

Observation #1: A higher percentage of Americans are being diagnosed and self-describing as having "mental issues" than ever before in history. Now either we are suddenly in an environment we cannot handle, which may be true, or we have decided to self-report what in the past would have been considered trivial inconveniences, or both.
Observation #2: There are many capitalist vampire industries whose job it is to promote the idea that we should all be happy to the gills and healthy beyond Kryptonians, and if we're not, they have the solution(s). Throughout most of human history, not being happy was not considered a terrible disease. At worst, it was inconvenience. Somehow, I can't see the Amish upset that they aren't doing cartwheels on a day-to-day basis.
Observation #3: "Mental illness" (I'm using quotations as Thomas Szasz might) is, in most cases, a matter of self-perception. People getting bombed in London during WW 2 certainly had reason to be "depressed" or "anxiety-ridden" or "paranoid," but I doubt if many perceived themselves as such or self-reported as such or plagued their fellow human beings with complaints about it.
Observation #4: When various physico-chemical profiles get blamed for "mental illness" of this sort or that, try to keep in mind that we are the survivors whose ancestors out-reproduced everyone else and passed on their genes. So blaming our biological profiles for the problems, and then attempting to correct them, is usually not a real good long-term solution for individuals or society in general. If we can't handle what we perceive or the way we perceive things to be, we need better training in how to perceive or we need to change the environments, both social and physical, in which we operate.
If this sounds too much like, "Suck it up, pansy," I'm sorry. But I mean, really, as far as Americans go, you have overweight, under-exercised narcissists who own more than anybody but the sheiks and who have been convinced they are missing out on the great things in life, probably because they are being bombarded with 40,000 ads a day telling them that they are not their ideal selves and they need to buy/rent/join to become all that they can be. It's a pretty sick environment.

1) Why do those who believe that there is no God, and, so, no Heaven, or Hell, think that their lives end the way that they end? I mean, some want to think that they go out, a winner. If this were the case, then they made it to Heaven, for winners, but, they don't believe that a Heaven exists.
2) I prefer to have things mean as much, in death, as in life. Not to have the state of the world, or whatever, mean nothing to me if I'm dead in the sense that I then have no means to perceive it.

Technically, there are actually three major things wrong with your argument, now that I think about it. I will, however, keep them to myself. They are obvious, so if you rub a few neurons together, you should arrive at them.
And yeah, I'm not kidding about problems with your argument. They are pretty obvious, and they are attached to the basic differences between playing a machine or a table game and betting a sporting event. In case it hasn't occurred to some, these are two entirely different processes with different mechanisms involved. Putting them both under the aegis of "gambling" is quite a definitional stretch. It's like lumping skeet shooting and poker as "sports."

Him, another friend, and I were heading out for a night on the town & he insisted on being the designated driver as he thought the responsibility of that would force him not to drink.

I've been SLIGHTLY drunk before. I put three shots of rum in a Pina colada and lemonade Slurpee and got SLIGHTLY drunk.
