The downside is sitting in a casino for hours on end. Between the smoke and germs, I'm not sure it's the most healthy way to make a living.
I notice when watching the poker shows, the players look to be some of the most unhealthiest "professionals" I can imagine. Living on coffee and smokes for long periods of time most are overweight with pasty white skin, or have the skinny look of pack a day smokers.
The most sedentary of lifestyles, I can't imagine doing it on a regular basis.
Most guys that are going off to gamble by themselves for long periods of time are using it as an excuse to spend some time with hookers. If you do have a beast of a wife, it's the best case scenario. Avoid her and spend some quality time with a rental. Rinse and repeat and call yourself a "professional".
The question is, are hookers then a business expense?
Absolutely, if for a legitimate business purpose such as entertaining clients. But this creates some other problems.
Let's remember that tax fraud is what got Al Capone caught... not his bank robbing or extortion. If you deduct hookers as a business expense it might pass muster with the IRS but you might get caught for other crimes.
Ha-ha arci's dead wife gets brought up again. You know, the wench who was ill for years and he chose to keep dragging her thru casinos so both of them could pile up the points on his slot club card while she could barely sit up straight? Now there's the picture-perfect scenario of a vp "AP"Then switch over to how Bob Dancer abused his wife by refusing to quit his vp addiction to help her thru her illness in favor of leaving her.
Yes....the dreamy, ethical, moral compass-driven worlds of the AP's.....

As usual when little man Robbie comments you can count on the fact he will be spewing lies left and right. I'm still waiting for this clown to take that YUUUGE bet of $300 to see my 2010 and/or 2015 tax returns. Also everyone would like to see where I claimed to be making $10,000 every year (oh wait, he can't because it is another silly lie). Both he and mama belly ran for the hills when that bet was offered. One can only laugh at them. They are both like bad pennies and come back and repeat the same lies if they think they can get away with them. And, once again they get caught with their pants down.
For a quick commercial break, I just got this commercial sent to me. This is funny, at least I think so.

It's so easy to reel poor lonely arci back in. Just bring up the dead vegetable, mock her, blame him for all her suffering....THEN WATCH HIM COME APART AT THE SEAMS AND TELL LIES!!! HAHAHAHA
Anyway....now that I put a shot of life into Dan's forum once again, it's holiday season and family calls. (and thanks arci--you're the bonus I was looking for!) I'll be back sometime after the 1st unless something more important comes up---like a wart that needs lancing, or a visit by Peter and Gordon![]()
Alan doesn't own the site anymore and it's pretty much an open forum. Rob likes to talk about wives and he's posted pictures of his for all to see, so have at it. Remembering that Rob is an old bald guy with a pot belly and bad skin, so beast is a relative term.
Me thinks some of the comments hit a little too close to home, hence his quick departure.
A confederacy of dunces. Do any of you boys and girls want to shoot some pool? Do you really think you can shut someone down? You are ignorant at the best, dumber and uglier than a mud fence at your worst. Dumb. Dumber than a rock. Just a goofball Rob Singer outfit. Dumber than hellatious. Just really stupid. The Singer kind of stupid.

This comment was made to Alan. It is ridiculous nonsense put down by a gambling forum troll who has no clue. Alan is a professional businessman who gambles for entertainment. I have absolutely nothing against that. I personally have a different perspective on gambling but more power to Alan and anyone else in the same position.
Just a jealous loser Mickey. You can spot them miles away. They're always so angry.
I recognize that there is a difference between those of us who gamble for recreation, and those who gamble as a source of income -- even as a full time job.
I just want to be sure that folks who are new to casinos also understand the difference and they should know that "professional" and "semi professional players" operate differently when it comes to bankroll, and perhaps income requirements and standard of living which includes health and retirement, vacations, and security.
We hear so much about "advantage plays" but frequently missing are discussions from the "professional" and "semi professional" players about their income requirements, standard of living, health and retirement, vacations and what security they have.
This statement is quite telling. We have it on Rob's word that one of these 100K winners was after he "retired from professional play." That should mean that during his 10 years of "professional play" Rob hit only one royal at $25 denom. And that has to mean that Rob played very little $25 denom video poker during his "professional career." Think about it. Only one royal at that level in 10 years.
Agreed. Perhaps would be a good time for a new thread, would you like to take the honor?
But quickly -- I think for one, you're either professional or recreational AP. A professional AP is one who makes his living solely or primarily from AP, whereas a recreational AP doesn't need to make money by gambling -- he either has a full time job where he makes most of his money, or is retired and has an amount set aside for AP and he can live off the rest of his savings for the rest of his life....or something along those lines.
That being said, I don't think there is an income requirement for recreational APs, since their job should be providing enough income for them. If their other job is not providing enough income for them (and they are living paycheck to paycheck), AP is probably not the smartest venture, given there is risk. But then again, I'm not in that situation so I don't really know.
For a professional AP, I think the income requirement is higher than regular 9-5 job working people. For one, you don't know what's going to happen -- your plays can vanish overnight, and although that isn't likely, it would be devastating to your income. If you get in a car accident and legs are paralyzed, you're going to have a very tough time being a professional AP, or at least I'd imagine. If something devastating happens, you're going to have to have enough money to support yourself for a while until you can find another means of income. On top of that (at least I'd imagine), you'd need a higher income requirement because ultimately your bankroll is the money you're going to be retiring with. Of course, there are other ways of making an income -- for example, investing your money. There becomes a point when you don't need all of your bankroll to just "sit there", better to use a chunk of your roll to invest in stocks, real estate, other APs, or even start a business or be an investor in a business.
I'm not sure what you mean by "standard of living". Google says it's, "the degree of wealth and material comfort available to a person or community." and I'm still not quite sure what that means. If I'm understanding it properly, it's basically saying, "Do you live your life like a poor person or paycheck to paycheck, or do you have some financial freedom?" In that case, all the professional APs I know, have financial freedom and are not living paycheck to paycheck type lives. They/we all have safety nets -- or rather, if we don't make any money or lose over a few months, no harm no foul (although that'd certainly suck, and has happened).
Not sure what there is to discuss about vacations. I've gone on a few vacations in the past few years. Never had a problem with going on vacation and taking time off from APing -- benefit of being on a team is someone else can fill in the gap if I or someone else goes out of town.
